NFL Draft Order 2012: Teams That Must Trade Down to Stockpile Picks
One thing that's become clear during the NFL draft process is that the class has plenty of depth, but lacks elite talent. The level of confidence in prospects starts to fade after the first handful of picks, which makes trading down a wise move to stockpile more picks.
Let's take a look at three teams that won't be able to get maximum value out of their current draft position, and therefore should consider seeking out a trade. For a complete look at the current draft order, visit the official draft site.
The Jaguars have several needs on the defensive side of the ball, but all of the prospects who will be on the board to fill them have question marks. Whether it's Quinton Coples' work ethic or Stephon Gilmore's ability to become an elite corner, there are no sure things available.
Since neither of those players, or anybody else for that matter, would make the Jaguars contenders heading into next season, they are better off trading down. Even middle-round picks are going to have pretty good value this season.
Having solid depth, which Jacksonville doesn't right now, is often just as important as finding that one key player. More picks will help solve that problem.
Safety Mark Barron has become the trendy projected pick for the Bills lately, but taking him with the 10th overall pick would be a reach. Position scarcity has pushed his stock higher than his actual value, so Buffalo should trade down if he's the front office's only target available.
Even if Barron gets selected before the Bills pick after a trade, the team also needs a wide receiver, and there will be several of those worth taking deeper in the round. Then they would also have more picks later on to fill their secondary needs.
It's an important draft for the Bills after making moves in the offseason to push them into playoff contention. They can't afford a major bust, and Barron at No. 10 carries that risk.
Luke Kuechly, the rock-solid linebacker out of Boston College, would be the perfect fit for Philadelphia, but it's looking more and more like he'll be off the board before the Eagles get a chance. That makes moving down the team's best option.
Finding somebody to patrol the middle of the defense should be the Eagles' top priority. After Kuechly, Dont'a Hightower is the next best middle linebacker, and he will likely be available deep in Round 1. The Eagles could move down about 10 spots and still have a good chance to land him.
Following a season where they didn't live up to high expectations, the Eagles need to make the most of this draft. Trading down gives them the best chance to make it happen.
