Race for 4th: Results That Will See Tottenham Get Champions League Spot

Frank WagnerJun 7, 2018

Tottenham supporters must feel pretty down right now.

After all, their team's form just keeps hitting new lows.

It once seemed to be a sure-fire Champions League berth just a few months ago, when Tottenham had a healthy grasp on third.

Since then, it has quickly turned into a nightmare, with Spurs actually sitting outside the top four at this point.

But do not fear, Spurs supporters: if these last few fixtures go as they should, Tottenham should still be contesting in the Champions League next year.

Now, realize that these are all predictions and take into account recent form and ability; if Spurs keep drifting into the depths of ridiculously low form, these could easily be incorrect.

As a refresher, here is the league table as it stands now:

Wigan vs. Newcastle: Saturday, April 28, 14:00 GMT

1 of 12

This is a battle of two of the most in-form teams in the Premier League.

Wigan owns wins over Manchester United and Arsenal in their past three matches and have a legitimate gripe about their loss to Chelsea prior to that.

However, Newcastle is on a run of six consecutive league wins and have looked amazing going forward.

It would be a shock to me if Newcastle didn't walk away with all three points, but Wigan are the sort to shock.

Prediction: Wigan 1-3 Newcastle

Chelsea vs. QPR: Sunday, April 29, 12:30 GMT

2 of 12

Last time these two clubs met, there were many talking points.

Chelsea were down to nine men, John Terry got into legal trouble, and QPR won 1-0.

Recently, QPR have been in hot form, playing physically and picking up victories over the likes of Arsenal and Tottenham.

Additionally, they will be pushing hard in this match, as they are in a struggle to stay out of the relegation zone.

However, most of their good results have come at home, while their road form has been absolutely atrocious; in their last 11 matches away from home, QPR has earned just two points.

Chelsea will be playing coming off the high of their Barcelona triumph; this will either be a really good or a really bad thing.

I'm going with the former.

Prediction:  Chelsea 3-0 QPR

Tottenham vs. Blackburn: Sunday, April 29, 15:00 GMT

3 of 12

The last time these two sides met, it was a tough-fought battle at Ewood Park.

It took a brace from Rafael van der Vaart to get the 2-1 victory for Spurs.

Obviously, though, the clubs were at different places at that time.

Tottenham was in great form at that time, a stark contrast to where they are now.

Blackburn was in the midst of an angry supporter campaign against their manager in October, but has since appeased their fans.

However, their results have still found them in the danger zone; hence, Rovers will be fighting hard for Premier League survival.

What goes unnoticed, though, is that amidst Tottenham's terrible slump, their home form has actually been okay.

The only really poor result at White Hart Lane was a loss to Norwich.

This could be a good chance for Spurs to finally get a bit of confidence heading into the final run-in.

Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Blackburn

Chelsea vs. Newcastle: Wednesday, May 2, 18:45 GMT

4 of 12

It was a 3-0 victory for Chelsea when they played Newcastle at St. James' Park in December.

I expect more of the same in this match.

Newcastle are obviously in great form right now, but Chelsea will be determined to get this victory.

The only thing working against the Blues is the looming FA Cup final they have with Liverpool three days later.

Given that this is a must-win for Chelsea to get the fourth spot and assure themselves a top-four spot, I don't think it will be too big of a problem.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-0 Newcastle

Bolton vs. Tottenham: Wednesday, May 2, 19:00 GMT

5 of 12

This will be a tough one for Tottenham, especially given their abominable road form recently.

They haven't had a road win yet in 2012, but this may just be the place to pick one up.

After all, Bolton has been one of those rare clubs whose home field proves to be a disadvantage; in 17 matches at the Reebok, Bolton has just 15 points.

Further, their defense has been porous since the departure of Gary Cahill.

In the March 27th FA Cup match, Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan played amazingly, making about seven unbelievable goal-preventing saves, yet he still conceded three goals.

Tottenham's offense has been offensive, but even they can't sod this up, right?

Wanderers will certainly be fighting hard to stay out of the drop, but I doubt they can get a result.

Prediction: Bolton 1-3 Tottenham

Newcastle vs. Manchester City: Sunday, May 6, 12:30 GMT

6 of 12

As long as the Manchester derby this Monday doesn't end with a United victory, this match will be hugely important to City.

If not, this could be a much easier match for Newcastle than they could have expected.

I'll go with a draw on Monday, and for City to push hard to wipe Newcastle away.

They've been on hot form recently, but I doubt the Magpies can handle a desperate City.

Prediction:  Newcastle 1-4 Man City

Aston Villa vs. Tottenham: Sunday, May 6, 13:00 GMT

7 of 12

If there is one team that can challenge Tottenham for the title of worst recent form in the Premier League, it's Villa.

With just three points in their last seven matches, of which four were at home, Villa have been just awful.

To make matters worse, they're just about safe from the drop.

Despite Spurs' poor road results, I expect them to take advantage of the situation.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-2 Tottenham

Liverpool vs. Chelsea: Tuesday, May 8, 19:00 GMT

8 of 12

This match should be a cagey affair.

Liverpool will have virtually nothing to play for, although some could argue that they will want to finish ahead of Everton.

However, with this match coming just three days after the two clubs meet in the FA Cup final, neither team will be at full strength.

It will quickly turn into a battle of two sides who don't want to lose, a la Chelsea vs. Arsenal.

This match has draw written all over it.

Prediction: Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea

Everton vs. Newcastle: Sunday, May 13, 14:00 GMT

9 of 12

With virtually no chance to pull into the fourth spot at this point, Newcastle will fight bravely at Goodison Park.

Just like in November, they will pick up a win against Everton, but it's too little, too late.

Prediction: Everton 1-2 Newcastle

Chelsea vs. Blackburn: Sunday, May 13, 14:00 GMT

10 of 12

In need of a victory to have any hope of fourth, Chelsea get a stroke of good luck in the fixture list.

With Blackburn already relegated, they will never show up, and the rout is on at Stamford Bridge.

Prediction: Chelsea 4-0 Blackburn

Tottenham vs. Fulham: Sunday, May 13, 14:00 GMT

11 of 12

A point is all Tottenham need to wrap up fourth in this match.

Tottenham have a good record against Fulham recently, winning their last four league encounters and not losing to the Cottagers in the league since 2008.

It will be a tough outing at White Hart Lane, but the crowd will push Spurs on to a draw.

Prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Fulham

With these results, Tottenham will grab fourth.

From there, it will be on to rooting against Chelsea in the Champions League final.

Actually, that could prove to be the cruelest fate of all.
