Saints Could Have Definitely Benefited from Mickey Loomis' Alleged Wiretapping

Aaron NaglerJun 7, 2018

So...anything happen while I was away on an extended family weekend?

Gracious.

As Josh Zerkle has already pointed out, this latest scandal surrounding the New Orleans Saints and general manager Mickey Loomis has the feel of a spy movie, with wiretaps and federal investigators no doubt about to get involved.

What I find interesting is the pushback, mostly from Saints fans, that Loomis couldn't possibly have gained anything from the alleged bugging of opposing coaches' communications on game day. Somehow, Loomis being a general manager renders him powerless to decipher the arcane coachspeak he no doubt came across, giving him no advantage over his opponents.

Balderdash.

This is a league that records every single minuscule piece of information about anything and everything. Have we forgotten the inanity of combine coverage already?

Not to mention, teams spend months in the offseason pouring over tape of their upcoming opponents, looking for any and every edge they can find. Perhaps Loomis and company would not have benefited directly on game day, but you can bet that whatever information would have been found would be filed away and given to Saints coaches to use as they saw fit.

What will be telling is where the story goes next, and if any further evidence comes to light. I would expect the U.S. Attorney's Office to take a look into all of the Saints' electronic communication between the years 2002 and 2004, when the wiretapping was alleged to have taken place.

Bountygate. A possible Drew Brees holdout. Now this.

Been a tough offseason for Saints fans...
