2012 NFL Draft: 5 Teams Most Likely to Trade Down in the 1st Round

Sigmund BloomJun 6, 2018

With everyone in the top half of the draft other than Indianapolis and Washington reportedly looking to trade down, the first round could be filled with moves.

Which teams are most likely to be adding to their haul by delaying their pick on Thursday night?

1. Jacksonville (7)

Fletcher Cox or Justin Blackmon could be the best player available, but the Jaguars war-room philosophy would probably value at least a half-dozen players very similarly at No. 7, making a trade-down the right move.

Potential team/player partners: Philadelphia (Mississippi State DT Fletcher Cox), Miami (Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill—to prevent another team from trading up for him), New York Jets (South Carolina DE/OLB Melvin Ingram)

2. New England (27/31)

The Patriots' modus operandi in the draft is clear—stockpile picks and take trade-down offers in early rounds to stockpile picks for the following year. With two in the first and plenty of teams clamoring to get in the end of the round, No. 31 is a prime pick to be traded.

Potential team/player partners: Miami, Cleveland (Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden), Indianapolis (Stanford TE Coby Fleener), St. Louis (North Alabama CB Janoris Jenkins)

3. Baltimore (29)

Ozzie Newsome has at least attempted to trade up or down in the first round four of the last five years. Looking at the big board, he's much more likely to see the value in trading down than the value in trading up unless an expected player falls into the strike zone for a smaller deal in the early 20s.

Potential team/player partners: Miami, Cleveland (Oklahoma State QB Brandon Weeden), Indianapolis (Stanford TE Coby Fleener), St. Louis (North Alabama CB Janoris Jenkins)

4. Kansas City (11)

Scott Pioli traded down in the first last year, and the Chiefs are situated at the beginning of a large plateau in talent that runs into the early 20s. If there's a taker, the Chiefs will listen.

Potential team/player partners: Tennessee (North Carolina DE Quinton Coples, Stanford OG David Decastro), New England (Alabama S Mark Barron), New York Jets (South Carolina DE/OLB Melvin Ingram)

5. San Diego (18)

AJ Smith is always willing to wheel and deal in the first round. With the variance in boards across the league, there's almost surely going to be at least one player a team values in their top 10 prospects available at No. 18

Potential team/player partners: Tennessee (North Carolina DE Quinton Coples, Stanford OG David Decastro), Cleveland (Iowa OT Riley Reiff), Detroit (Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick)
