WWE Extreme Rules 2012: Brock Lesnar Must Destroy John Cena

Donald WoodApr 23, 2012

As much as CeNation doesn’t want to hear this, WWE’s newest savior Brock Lesnar will destroy John Cena at Extreme Rules 2012 in Chicago.

The loss will be just the latest building block for the advancement of Cena’s character from the perceived “Super Cena” to a normal superstar.

After years of getting booed mercilessly, the WWE has finally had enough. Starting with the loss to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, the next few months are going to be tough on the fans that support Cena, especially after Lesnar destroys him at Extreme Rules.

Just think of it through the WWE’s eyes as a company; no matter what happens to Cena, he will always have the allegiance of the children and many others that view him as a legitimate star. The fans that hate him want him to lose, so having him be defeated only helps his character right now.

On the other hand, for Brock Lesnar’s return to work, he has to look like the war machine they have described him as so far. That will consist of beating John Cena handily in what should be a glorified squash match for Lesnar.

If WWE lets Lord Tensai go over Cena on Raw, letting Lesnar win is a no-brainer.

After Lesnar makes short work of the former WWE champion, they can turn Cena back into the underdog-type star he has always striven to be. While it worked for a long time, a star can’t be an underdog when he is always winning.

Two straight epic losses would remedy that situation.

My personal feeling is that the company knows they can’t turn Cena heel, so they are going to try and turn him into the face version of Ric Flair during his last run with WCW. Once every year or two, they will give him a run with the WWE title that lasts two or three months, then have him lose it and feud with younger guys when he isn’t near the gold.

Cena is just buying time while the fans start to realize that he isn’t the indestructible star he once was. He will still be a major star that fans should expect at the top of every WWE card from now until he retires, but wins won't come as frequently for the star.
