Ohio State Spring Game: Most Important Situations to Watch on Saturday
Spring is a time of year for new beginnings. For the Ohio State Buckeyes, spring is a time for new eras.
Urban Meyer will return to the coaching game for Ohio State in 2012, and he plans on returning them to championship-contender status.
Similar to any new coach in any situation, there are causes for concern with team chemistry, first-year player personnel and how the players respond to a new system.
Saturday will give Ohio State fans their first glimpse at the potential product in 2012. Here are the most important situations to watch:
How will Braxton Miller look in the spread offense?
Who or what do you think of when you hear Urban Meyer's name?
Tim Tebow. He had the ability to run the ball and throw if need be.
Braxton Miller is the No. 1 figure to watch this spring because of how important Meyer's quarterbacks need to be inside the system. Three times last season, Miller rushed for over 100 yards; he led the team in rushing.
Miller should be a perfect fit in this system, so expect to see a great deal of success on Saturday.
Will somebody step up and catch the ball?
Ohio State recorded 125 receptions last season. Not one player recorded more than 14.
Meyer's system is mostly running the football with the spread option, but he did have play-making wide receivers in his years at Florida. Percy Harvin is the first to jump out when thinking of Meyer's tenure. He could take a five-yard pattern and take it to the house.
Miller will do his part at the quarterback position, but somebody needs to step up on the perimeter.
Offensive line cohesiveness
You can forget about the spread option, you can forget about Miller having a great season and you can forget about Ohio State winning the Big Ten Conference if the offensive line isn't performing as a unit. The right side of the line seems to be the biggest potential issue. Marcus Hall and Reid Fragel will be under the microscope on the right side.
Ed Warinner is the new offensive line coach. How will the players respond to his demands?
There are plenty of questions about this offensive line.
We will see a glimpse of Ohio State's future on Saturday. I have no doubt that Meyer will bring Ohio State back to prominence sooner rather than later.
