Barcelona vs. Real Madrid: Why Pepe Is the Most Important Player in El Clasico

Pepe is the key to Real Madrid's La Liga title hopes. The polarizing defender must keep his head on straight, and keep Leo Messi off the board in Saturday's contest. 

Real Madrid has conceded 29 goals in 33 games this season. Pepe's staunch presence is a major reason for Madrid's excellent overall defense. 

Despite Pepe's obvious talents, he has gotten himself into trouble at times, especially against Barcelona. 

Pepe was sent off in their Champions League clash last season. He also stomped on Messi's hand in January, causing a bigger uproar among Barcelona faithful. 

On top of Pepe's questionable demeanor lies his propensity for acting. He loves to flop, attempt to draw penalties and draw the ire of fans because of it. 

If Pepe was not an excellent player, his antics would not be tolerated. He is an exceptional tackler, plays well in the air and is extremely confident with the ball at his feet.

He is the backbone of Madrid's defense. That will not be more important than it is in El Clasico. 

What Pepe Must do for Real Madrid to Win

Pepe will be charged with the tall task of stopping Messi. Messi is the best soccer player in the world, and nearly impossible to shutdown. 

Pepe must contain Messi by taking away his time and space. If Messi is given time to create, he will find an open teammate or punish the net by himself. 

Given their recent history, Pepe and Messi's battle should be incredible to watch.

The two players are among the best at what they do. That is what El Clasico is all about.

If Pepe can contain Messi, Madrid will bounce back from their disappointing Champions League performance. If he cannot, Messi will run rampant and Barcelona will come out on top.
