WWE Extreme Rules 2012 Results: John Cena Defeats Brock Lesnar
After getting the better of John Cena on multiple occasions following his return to WWE, it seemed as though Brock Lesnar would cruise to victory at Extreme Rules. Cena shocked the WWE Universe, however, by coming out on top in an Extreme Rules match.
Seeing as it was rumored that Lesnar was signed to a one-year, $5 million contract, it seemed quite likely that he would be allowed to continue the considerable momentum he built up by returning and hitting Cena with an F5. The creative team pulled a major swerve, however, and it will be interesting to see where both superstars go from here.

Leading up to the match Cena was in the midst of perhaps the worst stretch of his career. Not only did Lesnar make a fool of him on a couple occasions, but he lost to The Rock at WrestleMania and was shockingly defeated by Lord Tensai on RAW a couple weeks ago partly because of interference from David Otunga and Sakamoto.
It looked as if the plan had been to mire Cena in a losing streak so that he could either overcome it in grand fashion or perhaps snap and turn heel due to the pressure. With this victory, however, that whole situation was somewhat nipped in the bud as the win over Lesnar erases the losses to The Rock and Lord Tensai a bit.
Many were surprised that Lesnar was put into a feud and an actual match so quickly, but it was pretty much assumed that he would be going over Cena. You wouldn't think that the WWE would pay Lesnar all of that money only to put Cena over, but it's obvious that there are much greater plans for Lesnar over the long term.
From here you would have to think that Lesnar and Cena will continue their feud for the time being , so perhaps Lesnar will come out on top in the end. Either way, if the WWE's goal was to shock its fans at Extreme Rules, it accomplished that goal with a Cena win, which is quite the departure from the way things have been going over the past several years.
