Madden 2013: Why Calvin Johnson Deserves Prized Cover

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

The Madden 2013 cover vote has come down to two exciting players: Cam Newton and Calvin Johnson.

But it is Johnson who should win the highly-coveted cover, and there are a number of reasons why.

First off, Newton is entering just his second season in the league. After his promising rookie campaign, you have to believe he'll have many more chances to grab the cover down the line. His popularity has matched his high draft status last year.

Second of all, Johnson has been doing this for years, and he's been part of the Detroit Lions' rise. He's been through thick and thin with the Lions and has consistently produced despite the team's struggles before last season. He's a model player.

Speaking of Johnson's production, he had his best season of his career in 2011 when Matthew Stafford bloomed. Johnson had staggering numbers: 96 catches, 1,681 yards and 16 touchdowns. He led the league in receiving yards and placed second in touchdown receptions. His 96 catches also ranked fourth in the league.

Johnson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft, has defied the general theory that drafting a receiver in the top five is far-fetched. He has not only played extremely well, he's displayed the character you want to resemble the league.

Johnson has paid his dues and proven himself as a consistent force in the NFL. And in reality, the cover shouldn't ever go to a young player in my mind. It should be earned throughout the years.

Newton figures to be a tremendous player in the league, and he's undoubtedly one of the NFL's most exciting playmakers, but he needs to show he can repeat last season's performance before he earns the glorified Madden cover.
