Los Angeles Angels Reportedly Lock Up Erick Aybar with Extension

Timothy RappApr 19, 2012

After an offseason marked by the free-agent signings of Albert Pujols and C.J. Wilson, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are making sure they take care of the talent already in town too.

The team addressed the shortstop position today, signing Erick Aybar to a contract extension, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports:

"

aybar is a done deal at $35M, 4 yrs. that was number floating around in spring as well. anyway, hes a must for LAA infield

Aybar had a solid 2011 campaign, batting .279 with 71 runs scored, 33 doubles, 10 home runs, 59 RBI and 30 stolen bases. He also won the American League Gold Glove for his defense at shortstop.

Though he has struggled out of the gate this year, batting a measly .190, Aybar is vital to the team both for his defense and as the Angels' leadoff hitter. He can certainly provide a spark when he reaches base given his speed on the basepaths.

For the Angels, a team with serious World Series aspirations for this year and beyond, locking up Aybar was a must. This is a great move for both the team and its shortstop.
