Best Landing Spots for Asante Samuel

Chris TrapassoApr 19, 2012

If the Philadelphia Eagles are indeed shopping cornerback Asante Samuel, where are the best landing spots for him?

He's a 31-year-old, ball-hawking corner who led the NFL in receptions two of the last three years and has made four Pro Bowls.

Barring an agreement to restructure, Samuel is on the books for a hefty $9.4 million in base salary for the 2012 season.

These teams make the most sense to land the crafty, productive and somewhat under appreciated defensive back.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans lost secondary heart and soul Cortland Finnegan to the St. Louis Rams in free agency, and they certainly have a hole at his cornerback No. 1 position.

Although Samuel isn't nearly as sound against the run as Finnegan, he'd bring an intimidating demeanor to the team's defensive backfield due to his knack to reel in the big interception.

Jason McCourty has potential to be a true lock-down corner and could learn some of the finer nuances of the game from Samuel as a secondary mate.

The acquisition of Samuel would allow them to go in a direction other than cornerback with their first-round selection.

The Lions lost Eric Wright in free agency, and we saw the struggles they had against the pass last season. Playing in a division with Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler with Brandon Marshall, they understand the need for quality defensive back play.

Drafting at cornerback at No. 23 overall is a possibility, but Samuel would give them the luxury of going after their biggest need, which is on their offensive line.

A guy like Cordy Glenn would work wonders in Detroit and greatly increase the chances of keeping Matt Stafford healthy for 16 games.

The Lions don't have a ton of salary cap room, but they know adding a cornerback is a priority. Samuel would likely have to renegotiate his contract if he landed with in the Motor City.

Chris Houston's a solid corner, but the presence of Samuel would make him even better.

This team may be flying under the radar a bit, but I don't see why the Carolina Panthers would be against acquiring Samuel.

Their secondary allowed 28 receiving touchdowns in 2011 and their 14 interceptions tied Tampa Bay for 20th in the league.

Chris Gamble is an unheralded cornerback who's been steady for his entire career, but the other cornerback spot is open for competition.

Playing against Drew Brees and Matt Ryan four times a year is another reason why adding Samuel would make a lot of sense.

They don't have an abundance of draft picks, but unloading their 2012 fourth-rounder for Samuel can't be ruled out.

Another dark horse to land Samuel.

Here's why:

We all know they revamped their defensive line, so coming to Buffalo would be ideal for Samuel, who's been an interception fiend his entire career.

He has New England Patriots knowledge and would be given the chance to get back at his former club.

Though Buffalo is looking to get younger, especially in their secondary, Samuel could be an eventual Terrence McGee replacement and there's a chance 2008 first-rounder Leodis McKelvin doesn't make the opening day roster.

The team has some cap room left, and would likely have to talk Samuel into a restructure of some sort. But the ammunition is there for this deal to happen.

The Bills have two fourths and two fifths in this year's draft.
