5 Things Ozzie Guillen Must Do to Restore His Image in Miami
Ozzie Guillen is known for controversy. But little did the Miami Marlins think he would overshadow a team with this much star power and a new stadium. His comments to Time magazine about Cuban dictator Fidel Castro have struck the largest Hispanic community in Miami.
Not to mention the brand new ballpark is in the heart of Little Havana.
Guillen needs to begin the process of restoring his image right now, and it starts with these five steps.
Apologize Sincerely
1 of 5Step 1: Check.
Guillen was very apologetic and fielded questions for over an hour last week in a move he felt he had to make in order to avoid stiffer punishment or a harsher backlash from the Miami public.
Don't Talk About Politics
2 of 5Or religion. Or sexual preference. Or anything that could be even conceived as controversial.
The media is waiting for Ozzie to slip now, and he has to understand that. Even talking positively about one group of people could be spun into something out of proportion.
So he needs to shut up and not even begin to delve into issues outside of baseball and his team.
Make Himself Visible in the Community
3 of 5The opportunities are there for Guillen to be a good Samaritan in the Miami community, especially with the Cuban fanbase that he hurt so deeply.
The stadium is in Little Havana, and Guillen lives in Miami year-round. Any public appearances with the team he makes would be a positive step, and furthermore, any appearance he makes on his own can only help to mend the damage he's done.
Speak Spanish as Often as Possible
4 of 5How do you best relate to a Hispanic community? Speak their language. It's not like Guillen speaks English that well anyway, so he needs to turn to his Spanish roots just like he did at the press conference.
Since he claims part of the controversy with his comments started because words got "lost in translation," then let it be the last time that's even a possibility. You want to give an interview to a major network? Speak your mind in Spanish.
Win Games
5 of 5This is the biggest key of all for Guillen. As the manager of a baseball team with a lot of talent, a beautiful new stadium and an energized fanbase for the first time in years, he has to be able to win consistently.
If the Marlins are in the hunt throughout his time in Miami and Guillen is calling the right shots, the controversies will begin to seem like a thing of the past.
