2012 NFL Draft: Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco 49ers Meet with Coby Fleener

Dylan DeSimoneApr 18, 2012

The San Francisco 49ers held a local pro day this week with a pretty competitive turnout. During the pro day, former Stanford Cardinal tight end Coby Fleener arrived to meet with the 49ers staff. Fleener did not work out or participate in drills.

The 49ers have reportedly met with a multiple of first-round worthy pass-catchers that include names like Rueben Randle, Stephen Hill and Kendall Wright. Fleener will likely be the last member of that group to meet with the 49ers, since Michael Floyd declined and Justin Blackmon is way out of reach.

But like they say, save the best for last.

The former Cardinal standout could very well be available when the 49ers select with the 30th overall pick. Fleener's measurables are extremely valuable to the Niners, who need to upgrade both their 3rd down and red zone offenses. The 49ers don't have a ton of holes to fill and could be flexible with their first draft pick. So, if you're one of those people who thinks Fleener is a luxury pick, the 49ers can afford that luxury.

In addition to that, general manager Trent Baalke spoke to the media regarding the draft, Greg Williams and some of their new free agent acquisitions. What stood out to a lot of people was that Baalke had said they have a specific player in mind when they pick at No. 30.

Baalke seemed confident this player would be available at that spot without having to trade up for him, and said if he is, the 49ers are prepared to take him. A lot of mocks have projected Fleener as an early second-rounder, often to the Colts where he would be paired up with Andrew Luck, once again. But, I don't believe Fleener gets past the 49ers, and certainly not past the New York Giants at the end of the first.

I have a hunch that Fleener is the mystery player Baalke eluded to in his talk with the media. We'll find out for sure next Thursday, April 26 when the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft kicks off.
