New York Yankees: It's Time to Start Calling It the Jose Campos Trade

Kenny DeJohnApr 18, 2012

Jose Campos is really, really good.

It's easy to see why MLB.com ranked him No. 5 out of the Yankees' top-10 prospects this offseason.

In his most recent start for Single-A Charleston on Monday, Campos tossed five more brilliant innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out seven.

On the season, Campos is now 3-0 with a ridiculous 0.56 ERA. He's struck out 18 and walked four in his 16 innings of work. Not to mention, he's allowed just one earned run on the season.

Opposing batters are hitting .093 against the young right-hander—that's just five hits—and he owns a WHIP of 0.56.

Campos possesses the tools to be a top-of-the-rotation starter.

He can run his fastball up to 95 mph, and also owns a devastating curve. His changeup is a work in progress, but the fact that he's developing one is a good sign.

This is just his first go-around in full-season baseball, but it seems as if he's adjusting quite well.

It's hard to believe that he was pretty much a "throw-in" in the deal that sent Michael Pineda to New York, and Jesus Montero and Hector Noesi to Seattle.

At the time, Pineda was the main target of the Yankees. He was coming off a 9-10 season as a rookie with the Mariners, and showed great promise in his debut season.

Campos, on the other hand, was just a hard-throwing prospect getting his first taste of professional baseball.

The Yankees' great scouts must have seen something in Campos, and the team was able to acquire him along with Pineda. Whoever proposed that idea now looks like a genius, as Campos is absolutely dominating at the Single-A level right now.

We've yet to see Pineda start in a Yankee uniform, and he'll likely contribute to the big club before the 19-year-old Campos will, but Campos may end up being the biggest addition of this past offseason.

At just 19, it'll probably be a few years before we see him in New York.

If he keeps pitching like this, though, he could surprise us and move through the system much quicker than we think.
