WWE News: Big Update on Smackdown's Future on SyFy
It wasn’t always Friday Night SmackDown.
Once upon a time, it was Thursday Night SmackDown. But that was long before the blue brand switched to its current channel, SyFy.
Though SmackDown typically airs on Friday nights on SyFy, we’ve seen several “live special” SmackDowns, in which the show aired live on Tuesday nights rather than in the traditional Friday time slot.

Many, myself included, have viewed this as the WWE testing out a potential permanent move to Tuesdays. But will that actually happen anytime soon? Let’s find out.
"There are currently no firm plans for WWE to move SmackDown to Tuesdays on a regular basis, according to f4wonline.com. WWE has been running live Tuesday SmackDown specials in recent weeks, but ratings have not been strong enough on Tuesdays to warrant the change.
"
Traditionally, Tuesday is a much better night for TV viewership than Friday, but for some reason or another, that hasn’t been the case for SmackDown.
A couple of reasons why that might be the case: the popularity of other TV shows that air at the same time that SmackDown does on Tuesday, or the simple fact that the WWE doesn’t promote these live specials enough, and thus, regular Friday viewers forget to watch on Tuesday.
Whatever the case may be, last Tuesday’s live SmackDown saw a significant ratings drop from the previous week’s SmackDown, which aired on a Friday.
This has actually often been the case with most live SmackDowns. Though Friday generally isn’t a great night for TV viewing, it may be a better “wrestling night” than Tuesdays.
SmackDown actually draws pretty solid ratings in its Friday time slot, and whether that’s because of a lack of competition or not, the WWE seems best suited to stay on Fridays for the time being. The WWE has a good thing going on Fridays, and even though I’ve advocated for a move to another weekday in the past, why ruin a good thing?
Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10 to 20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
