Redskins Reportedly Trying to Trade Wide Receiver Jabar Gaffney

Field YatesJun 7, 2018

Veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney has been in the news a lot these days, and not for the reasons he would like to be.

His recent Twitter rant—which he claimed was the result of an account hacker—made headlines throughout the sports media grid, but now the focus is back on Gaffney for reasons more related to football.

Appearing on an ESPN Radio affiliate in Washington, D.C., Gaffney claimed that the Washington Redskins are attempting to trade him.

On the one hand, given Washington's acquisitions of both Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan, this move makes some logical sense as the team is facing a potential logjam at the receiver spot.

Conversely, Gaffney was very good for the Redskins in 2011. He racked up 68 catches for 947 yards and five touchdowns despite shaky quarterback play from the likes of John Beck and Rex Grossman.

At $2.65 million for the 2012 season, Gaffney is well worth the investment from a talent and production standpoint. More than likely, the Redskins are fed up by his most recent rant and are attempting to move onto a new frontier with Robert Griffin III leading the way.

Should Gaffney's claim be true, the Redskins may be able to fetch sufficient value for his services from a team looking for a veteran with some gas left in the tank.

As the draft approaches, Washington could target a mid- to late-round pick in exchange for Gaffney, with possible landing spots including receiver-needy teams such as Miami, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Houston and Arizona.
