WWE Rumors: Best Possible Opponents for Stone Cold Steve Austin When He Returns

Riley KontekApr 18, 2012

Speculation is running wild, and all signs point for the Texas Rattle Snake to return to the ring, possibly at WrestleMania. The 47-year-old Steve Austin has teased at a return for a while now, especially since The Rock made his presence felt in the main event of WrestleMania this year.

So, if Austin plans on returning, many people are wondering who he will face. People are already salivating over the possibilities of different matches we could see Austin in. Let's look at the best possible opponents for when Stone Cold returns.

CM Punk

This one is obvious, due to the words both men have exchanged on Twitter. This one is also a phenomenal match because it puts together the most popular anti-heros of the past 15 years.

In his time in the WWE, Stone Cold defied his boss, Mr. McMahon. As many times as the WWE tried to make Austin a heel, fans simply embraced Austin more and more as the anti-hero. His crazy antics, that no sane person would ever do to his boss, made him the most popular star in the WWE. To this day, Austin has a loyal following that he would not have garnered had he stuck with his "Ringmaster" gimmick.

Currently, CM Punk finds himself in a similar position, as he openly defies and disrespects general manager John Laurinaitis. This, in combination with several other things, has made Punk the popular anti-hero of this era.

Punk is one of the best technical performers, while Austin is very entertaining, brutally powerful wrestler. It would be a an awesome match that would attract many viewers.

Austin is the "toughest S.O.B" in the WWE and Punk is "the best in the world." Since the WWE likes to have slogans and monikers to sell matches, this would sell perfectly.

Brock Lesnar

One of the reasons Stone Cold left the WWE is because he did not want to put over a very young, relatively inexperienced Brock Lesnar. He felt he had not paid his dues and was unwilling to lay down for him.

Now that Lesnar is back, it would be interesting to see the former-UFC champion take on the Rattlesnake in the ring. Maybe now, Austin would lay down for a Lesnar victory.

I still think Austin would come back only to win, but I could be wrong. The fans would love to watch and see Austin come out of his return match victorious, as he is so popular.

Currently, Lesnar is feuding with John Cena, but who knows how long that will go. Again, it is assumed that Austin would return for a match at WrestleMania, so by that time everything would be cleared up.

Seeing this match has been a decade in the making.

The Rock

The Rock and Stone Cold always put on exciting matches every time they stepped in the ring. The two worked so well together that it is no surprise they have already headlined a couple of WrestleMania events in their career opposite of each other.

We can expect to see The Rock at next year's WrestleMania already, as he has made his intentions known. He obviously headlined this year's WrestleMania, helping to set a WWE pay-per-view record in doing it.

Obviously, both men are not full-time performers. But, a match between these two would be a throwback to all the fans that watched the Attitude Era, when these two were constantly rivaling each other.

They say don't fix what isn't broken. So, why not make yet another WrestleMania classic between two legends of the industry.
