Serena Williams and John Isner: Could They Win an Olympic Gold Medal?

Van SiasJun 2, 2018

With the Summer Olympics only a matter of months away, the scramble is definitely on to see who will fill out the national tennis squads in the race for gold-medal glory.

And aside from vying for a spot on the team, plans are being made to see who would compose the mixed-doubles squads. Case in point: John Isner just announced how he would like to play mixed doubles with all-time great Serena Williams.

She's a partner anyone would love to play with in the quest to stand atop the winning podium. Isner and Williams would make a devastating duo, but would they be able to achieve the ultimate in international acclaim?

Physically, those two would stand apart from nearly any mixed-doubles tandem other nations could put together. The 6'9" Isner has that one thing you just can't teach: height. Along with that height comes one of the biggest serves currently in the men's game.

Isner backs that up with devastating groundstrokes, particularly the forehand, and a surprising ability to track down a number of balls. It's hard to try to hit him off the court; instead, he's the one doing that to his opponents.

Williams knows a thing or two about that. The 13 Grand Slam singles titlist has built a Hall-of-Fame career by being able to blow her opponents off the court.

She also possesses off-the-charts physical ability, with the ability to hit winners when forced out of position—which she rarely is. Physicality aside, she also knows how to dig deep and pull off match victories when it seems she's on the ropes.

Williams has had mixed-doubles success in the past, with her first two Grand Slam titles coming in the category. And she and big sister Venus have won numerous major tournaments together, showing she has the instinct for doubles.

As the American males, particularly Isner (the recently crowned top U.S. player) know: Serena could definitely improve the odds for making it to the top of the medal stand. If Isner's lobbying pays off, the Americans surely jump into the favorites category.
