Chelsea vs. Barcelona: Keys to Blues Pulling off Massive Upset

Richard LangfordApr 17, 2012

There are three key areas that Chelsea must execute if they want to be victorious in their seemingly impossible task of beating mighty Barcelona.

There is little reason to believe Chelsea can do this. Until this Champions League run, they have been a non-factor, while Barcelona have been playing better than ever.

However, there was little reason to believe Chelsea would even advance to these semifinals.

This is a team that is coming together at the right time. They have momentum and the pressure-free atmosphere that accompanies there underdog status. They cannot be counted out.

Here is what they must focus on against Barcelona.

Take Advantage of Free and Corner Kicks

Chelsea is dangerous from frees and corner kicks. Just ask Spurs about Frank Lampard's ability to net a ball off of a free kick.

Chelsea can't just focus on scoring goals off of these kicks, either. They must turn them into scores. To do this, they will have to be on point with their kicks, and they will also have to be physical away from the ball.

They must get could position and not allow themselves to be denied when going for the ball.

Keep the Pressure High

Firstly, the Blues will have to stay aggressive and keep the pressure on Barca's defense.

They can't get timid and passively try to control possession without creating scoring opportunities. They have to turn possession into shots. Obviously, they will concede chances to Barcelona this way but will also keep them on their heels.

Secondly, Chelsea's defense has to come out high and pressure when Barcelona is in possession. They need to keep Lionel Messi from the ball as much as possible, and when he does have it, they'll have to try and force it away from him as quickly as possible.

Counter Attack

The most accessible way for the Blues to get some balls past the goalie in this match is going to be on a counter attack.

The aggressive Barca team can be caught sneaking their wide defenders up the field when they are going into attack mode.

Chelsea's midfielders are going to need to come up big in this area. Players like Ramires will have to steal possession and quickly turn that into attack by either passing or scoring themselves.
