Oakland A's Blanked by Los Angeles Angels 6-0 as Hitting Was Again Deficient

Clarence Baldwin JrApr 16, 2012

New game, same story: The Oakland A's are simply not hitting. Held to six hits by four Los Angeles Angels pitchers, the A's suffered their second shutout in three games, falling 6-0.

Kendrys Morales hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Jared Weaver cruised over 6 2/3 innings. Brandon McCarthy took the loss, allowing 11 hits and five runs in seven innings.

The game essentially ended in the first inning. After Weaver retired the A's in order, back-to-back singles by Howie Kendrick and Albert Pujols put runners on first and second for Morales. On an 0-2 pitch, Morales launched a fastball to left-center to give the Angels a lead they would never relinquish.

Though McCarthy managed to settle down, he did not have his best stuff tonight. It finally caught up with him in the seventh when he allowed back-to-back doubles to Pujols and Morales to be chased from the game.

Reliever Andrew Carignan then allowed the last two runs (one charged to McCarthy) without allowing a hit. Three walks and a wild pitch made the final score 6-0. For the season, the A's have scored 28 runs in 11 games. That is good for last in the American League and second to last in the majors behind only Pittsburgh.

Good: None. Nothing good can come from a lackluster performance. Simply putrid.

Bad: Brandon McCarthy. I can not be too hard on McCarthy as one of those runs was not his fault and he did pitch into the eighth inning. But 11 hits in seven-plus innings is a sign he was not in complete command.

Ugly: Andrew Carignan. Just awful. Three walks and a wild pitch. He threw 25 total pitches and only 10 were strikes. I started to put Coco Crisp here, but his .146 average is simply par for the course early on. Jemile Weeks, Kurt Suzuki, Daric Barton and Eric Sogard are all hitting under .200. Just terrible production at the plate.

At 4-7, the A's continue the four-game set Tuesday night in Anaheim. Tyson Ross will make his first start of the year against former Oakland starter Dan Haren. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET.
