Derrick Rose vs. Deron Williams: Why Rose Is the Better Point Guard
Derrick Rose vs. Deron Williams: Who is the best point guard in the NBA?
Don’t forget Chris Paul, but last week’s piece showed why Rose is the better floor leader than the Los Angeles Clippers' franchise leader. Still, that leaves one critical question unanswered:
Is Rose better than the New Jersey Nets’ star?
Williams Is the Better Shooter, but Rose Is the Better Scorer
1 of 3Deron Williams is one of the best shooting point guards in the league. He can hit it from both mid-range and beyond the three-point arc—sometimes at will when he heats up. With no disrespect to Rose, who has drastically improved his jump shot since entering the NBA, Williams is the far better shooter.
However, Rose is a far better penetrator and the superior overall scorer. Williams can penetrate to the rim, but he often shies from paint contact. He rarely looks to drive first, preferring to shoot or find teammates.
Rose is different. When his teammates are not open he almost always prefers to drive to the rim and force the issue with his defender. Because he is so fast, defenders can rarely stay in front of him in the lane.
So, Williams is the better shooter, but Rose is the more lethal complete scorer.
Rose Is the Better System Defender
2 of 3In fairness, neither Williams nor Rose are special defenders. However, while Williams was once an average defender in Utah, he has barely paid attention on that end of the floor in New Jersey.
Rose, who began his career as one of the worst defenders in basketball, has worked hard to become a good system defender. Now, he won’t wow anyone, but he is league-average based on most defensive metrics.
Rose Is a Winner and Unselfish Teammate
3 of 3Yes, this element has to factor into the discussion.
Williams forced his way out of Utah last year and has not exactly put in 150 percent effort every night in New Jersey. His attitude may change when he goes somewhere he wants to play, but for now that is his reputation.
Rose is the consummate teammate and winner, beloved by everyone in the Bulls franchise.
So, whom would you rather have?
