Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Examining the Best Scenarios in Mock No. 5

Chris TrapassoApr 16, 2012

ESPN's Todd McShay has shown a remarkable amount of dedication and insight in his most recent 2012 NFL mock draft.

Instead of simply making picks for all the teams with selections in the first round, he provides alternate scenarios that would play a major factor in each club's decision-making process and could ultimately change the prospect who's drafted.

Let's look at which scenarios make the most sense.

Miami Dolphins: Scenario 1

The pick: QB Ryan Tannehill

McShay says: Tannehill has all kinds of upside with his athleticism and arm talent, and he played under new Miami offensive coordinator Mike Sherman in college. Getting him is the best-case scenario whether the Dolphins stay put or trade up.

My take: I couldn't agree with Todd anymore. If anyone's going to get the most out of the somewhat raw but certainly talented Tannehill it's Dolphins offensive coordinator Mike Sherman.

Are the Dolphins ready to contend for the playoffs next season? Maybe, but it's a long shot. They're building for the future, and that's precisely what Tannehill represents.

He could be a fine starter by the 2013 season, and that's when Miami should aim to make their most legitimate playoff push.

Cincinnati Bengals: Scenario 1

The pick: G David DeCastro

McShay says: DeCastro is a good value at this point and fills a top need. He can step in right away and help stabilize things in front of second-year QB Andy Dalton.

My take: If DeCastro's still available at No. 17, expect the Bengals to make this selection within seconds of going on the clock.

They need an upgrade at offensive guard, and DeCastro is the best guard prospect to the enter the NFL in a decade.

I'm not sure how likely it is that he falls this far, but if he does, he'll be a Bengal.

San Diego Chargers: Scenario 4

The pick: OL Cordy Glenn

McShay says:  Opt for the top pass-rusher on their board, whether that's USC's Nick Perry or Alabama's Courtney Upshaw.

My take: McShay has San Diego going offensive line, but the fourth scenario makes the most sense. The Chargers offense is predicated on the vertical pass, but with Jared Gaither re-signed, Philip Rivers will be adequately protected.

The 'Bolts only accumulated 32 sacks last year, which tied them with the Cleveland Browns for 23rd in the NFL.

Shaun Phillips is an underrated pass-rusher, but he needs a complement.

Nick Perry would be a fantastic fit in their 4-3 base alignment and has the size, experience and strength to contribute from Day 1.
