NBA Draft 2012: Charlotte Bobcats Must Take Kidd-Gilchrist If They Win Lottery

Sam R. QuinnJun 7, 2018

The Charlotte Bobcats need to take Michael Kidd-Gilchrist over Anthony Davis if they are fortunate enough to win the NBA draft lottery.

The Bobcats are in complete disarray and in the midst of a 15-game losing streak. They rank 20th, 29th and 28th in points per game, rebounds per game and points allowed, respectively.

Kidd-Gilchrist has the type of winning attitude that a young team like the Bobcats needs to right the ship. He is an elite athlete, far surpassing the skills of anyone on the Bobcats’ current team.

His passing skills put Kemba Walker and D.J. Augustin to shame. His ability to drive to the hoop makes Walker seem like a high school player. And that’s not an easy thing to do.

MKG is a lockdown defender, which the Bobcats could get out of Davis, but Kidd-Gilchrist is better on the perimeter. The Bobcats already have a lot invested in Bismack Biyombo, who plays a game similar to that of Davis.

Biyombo is still only 19 by the way, meaning that he still has so much room to grow and develop into a premier big man.

It wouldn’t make sense to draft another big man, even if he is as good as Davis.

He’s an excellent rebounder, which again, the Bobcats could get out of Davis, but Kidd-Gilchrist gets the mid- to long-range rebounds that Davis wouldn’t be in position to grab.

His one weakness is that his perimeter shooting is sub-par, but that could be compensated with Walker and Augustin’s ability to do so.

While all the experts are banking on the Bobcats drafting Davis, the team would be wise to avoid the temptation of a huge impact player in year one, and wait for Kidd-Gilchrist to evolve into a star in his second year.

Even though Davis averaged nearly five blocks in his only college season with Kentucky, he won’t get anywhere near that in the NBA. He’s too skinny right now and needs to put some meat on his bones to hang with the elite low-post players in the league.

While the Bobcats can’t go wrong no matter who they choose, they would be right to avoid the temptation of Davis and go for the powerhouse small forward, Kidd-Gilchrist.
