Alex Rodriguez 3rd, Robinson Cano 4th Against Righties in Yankees' New Lineup

Kenny DeJohnApr 13, 2012

George A. King III of the New York Post reports that manager Yankees Joe Girardi has decided to make a minor change in the lineup for the home opener against the Angels, and against all future right-handers.

Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez will now flip-flop in the batting order, with Cano taking over the cleanup duties from the struggling Rodriguez.

A-Rod has hit cleanup for all six games this season, and he has failed to produce at a high level. He's hitting just .174 with no home runs, no RBI and six strikeouts.

His struggles became the most notable during the past three game set against the Orioles. Rodriguez was just 1-for-13 in the series and 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position—not exactly the production you're looking for out of your cleanup hitter.

On the other hand, Cano is hitting slightly better. He is batting .250 with no home runs and no RBI. However, he has three doubles compared to Rodriguez's two.

Although both sluggers are struggling early on this season, the move does make sense. Many were pulling for Cano to be the No. 3 hitter in the lineup—which he still will be against left-handers—but this move will surely help with production.

From a purely statistical standpoint, Rodriguez should not be hitting cleanup. His .174 is not helping the team score runs, and he's currently been unable to drive in runners in scoring position.

However, he currently sports an on-base percentage of .345.

He is getting on base at a decent clip, and that will give Cano more chances to drive in runs in the No. 4 spot. Cano is not hitting much better on the season, but he's still hitting better than A-Rod.

Fans will jump the gun and make judgments about this lineup after just one game, which is most definitely unfair.

Girardi is known, unfortunately, for making pretty stupid decisions, but we need to give this lineup at least two full series to see what it's capable of.

We will see this lineup a majority of the time, as there are obviously more right-handed starters than left-handed.

If this little tweak works, the Yankees' offense could finally start to get rolling.
