What One More Pick in the 2012 NFL Draft Means for the Cincinnati Bengals

Andrea HangstJun 7, 2018

With the trade of linebacker Keith Rivers to the New York Giants, the Cincinnati Bengals now have nine picks in this year's draft—three in the fifth round alone.

The pick, No. 167 overall, gives them back-to-back picks in the round and an opportunity to find value at yet another position of need.

In my recent, full need-based mock draft for the team, I tried to address areas the Bengals most seriously need to address this year. With the additional pick, I see them continuing to build depth on the defensive line.

In my mock, I have the Bengals taking just one defensive lineman: defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi in the fourth round. With this added pick, the Bengals could go with another defensive end, but I could also see them taking a defensive tackle.

They might not have to look far to get him either. Cincinnati's Derek Wolfe could easily still be on the board when it's time for the Bengals to pick. He'd be a project and may ultimately be a better fit in a 3-4 defense considering he's got the physical makeup to anchor a 4-3 line but lacks the necessary strength.

Another option at the position would be Alabama's Josh Chapman. He has the ideal size, speed and strength to play on the defensive line, but his skill set is more suited to keeping centers at bay than stopping quarterbacks or running backs.

The Bengals could also pick up an additional wide receiver with this pick. Though they'll probably add one in the first (or, at the latest, second) round, they could pick up another simply because the talent is on the board. Marvin McNutt could be a solid addition here.

Chances are Cincy will look at this additional pick as a way to build the roster, but there's always the chance it trades it if the asking price is right. While it's hard to say the Bengals would prefer to have a seventh-round pick instead of all three fifths, it's quite possible if they have a later-round target whom they believe some other team will take.

Either way, the Bengals have given themselves another opportunity to further improve their team. Swapping Rivers for a fifth-round pick was a savvy move and allows them to be more creative in the draft. Finding an impact player with this new pick would just be icing on an already sweet cake.
