Dirk Nowitzki or Steve Nash?: The NBA's Real MVP

Ron JohnsonMay 13, 2007
IconJudgment Day is finally upon us...and Dirk Nowitzki has won the MVP award over Steve Nash.
Of course, that doesn't mean we can't fight about it.
So does the big German really deserve the hardware?

Dirk's season was one of anarchy and sorrow, from his much-publicized "Yo Momma" fight with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to the shocking playoff upset at the hands of the Golden State Warriors. Sure, he's got his supporters in Dallas, but the folks in Phoenix feel just as strongly about Nash.
How good was Nash this year? He posted gaudy numbers and led his team to the second round of the playoffs, which is more than Dirk can say for himself. In my book, the Phoenix point guard is the MVP. Not because he plays for the Suns, or because I hate Mark Cuban but because he earned it.
Maybe the voters felt bad for Nowitzki after he got embarrassed by Baron Davis. Maybe they wanted Dirk to have something to look at besides all the headlines saying he's not a leader. Still, there's no getting around the fact that the Suns are fighting for a title while the Mavs are home checking out old OC episodes on TiVo.
And so let the debate begin: Who deserves the NBA MVP? Nowitzki? Nash? Someone else? The balloting may be done, but the war of words goes on. My vote's for Nash. Someone tell me why I'm wrong.
