WWE News: Update on Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus and the Extreme Rules Card

Drake OzApr 11, 2012

On last week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, Alberto Del Rio beat Sheamus to earn a future World Heavyweight Championship match.

Since then, there has been speculation that Del Rio’s win would result in a Sheamus vs. Del Rio vs. Daniel Bryan match at Extreme Rules, given that Bryan is entitled to a rematch following his WrestleMania loss.

Yet, it was revealed on last night’s live SmackDown show that Bryan would get his rematch against Sheamus in a 2/3 Falls Match at Extreme Rules, leaving many to wonder where that leaves Del Rio.

So, what’s going on with the World Heavyweight title picture and the rest of the card? Let’s find out.

"

Aside from Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena and Sheamus vs. Bryan 2/3 falls at the Extreme Rules PPV, other planned matches include Chris Jericho vs CM Punk, Randy Orton vs Kane (originally scheduled as a cage match) and probably some kind of Cody Rhodes vs. Big Show gimmick match.

Originally the plan as of last week was geared toward moving Bryan down and moving Del Rio into the spot, and then Del Rio won the match to earn the spot, yet Bryan was given the shot. So that would indicate a plan change based on crowd reaction. Nothing else right now is being strongly teased.

No need to address the remainder of the Extreme Rules card because I think that anyone with a brain knew that those matches were happening.

However, it is interesting to see that the WWE was considering moving Bryan down the card.

Are they serious? Why would you even think about de-pushing Bryan when he’s arguably the hottest act going in all of professional wrestling right now?

If anything, the WWE should be capitalizing on Bryan’s wave of momentum for as long as it can. That doesn’t necessarily mean he has to instantly regain the World Heavyweight Championship.

Perhaps he can just move into a different main event caliber feud, or maybe he even switches over to Raw and challenges CM Punk for the WWE Championship.

I am just glad the WWE didn’t completely give up on Bryan by giving the World title shot to Del Rio at Extreme Rules instead.

To be honest, I’m not sure why ADR is involved in this feud in the first place. The creative team simply should have moved him to SmackDown after Extreme Rules and then started his feud with Sheamus then.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
