Baylor Basketball's Self-Imposed Penalties for Violations Deemed Enough by NCAA

Eric BallJun 7, 2018

The entire Waco campus can take a collective sigh of relief.

On Wednesday the NCAA declared no additional penalties will be added to those self-imposed by Baylor University according to Andy Gardiner of USA Today.

The violations include over 1,200 impermissible phone calls and text messages executed over a 29-month duration. The majority of those calls involved the men’s and women’s basketball teams, but nine programs total were guilty of the infractions.

Here is a sample of the NCAA press release explaining the penalties (via NCAA.org):

"

Penalties in this case include three years of probation, recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions. The current head men's basketball coach received a suspension of two conference games next year and telephone call recruiting restrictions. The former assistant men's coach received a one-year show-cause for recruiting activities. The current head women's basketball coach received off-campus and telephone recruiting restrictions.

"

Essentially, the Bears can still compete in postseason tournaments and are just under more scrutiny than the average school for the next three years. While not the ideal situation, it could be much worse.

Baylor president Ken Starr sounded extremely relieved to hear the NCAA would not issue any further infractions (via USA Today):

"

We are grateful that this matter has been resolved, and that the NCAA Committee on Infractions has agreed to the facts of this case as reported in the joint summary disposition. While mistakes sometimes happen, it is important that we acknowledge our errors and respond to them in a manner that is open and honest, and that we strictly adhere to NCAA rules.

"

Congrats Baylor, the basketball program is going to be just fine. Well, as long as they can find someone to replace Perry Jones III…
