Summer Olympics 2012: USA Stars We Can't Wait to See Compete
America's top athletes will be showcasing their talents for the world to see during the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Here we have the athletes that will be a must-see in London as they compete for gold in their respective sports. From basketball to tennis to swimming, USA is loaded with stars that we can only see perform at a high rate every four years.
Tyson Gay, Track and Field
1 of 5If you blink during the Olympics, you might miss Tyson Gay as he tries to bring home the gold.
He might not be the fastest man in the summer games, but he is the second-fastest behind Usain Bolt. Battling minor injuries throughout his training, Gay wants to prove to everybody that he can still fly out of the blocks.
This seems like a reasonable expectation, since Gay became the only person to beat Usain Bolt since 2008 when he beat him in 2010 in Stockholm.
This summer, Gay will not be doubling up in the 100- and 200-meter and will solely focus on the 100-meter, which he has excelled at.
UConn's Dream Team, Women's Basketball
2 of 5The USA women's basketball team was just named a few days ago and might be one of the best women's teams USA has seen in awhile.
The team should be known as the UConn All-Stars since five former players will be playing under their former coach, Geno Auriemma. With players like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Swin Cash, Tina Charles and Maya Moore, this team looks like a threat to be a competitor.
The women's team will be on a mission since they will be the top team after winning the 2010 World Games. With one more spot left open on the team, you can expect Brittney Griner to join the team after leading her Baylor team to the championship just a week ago.
Michael Phelps, Swimming
3 of 5Michael Phelps' favorite stage might be the Olympic podium, where he was a frequent visitor during the 2008 games. While breaking records along the way, Phelps won a record eight gold medals at the 2008 Olympics.
What else can Phelps accomplish this year other than break his own records and bring more medals back to the USA? Nothing, but he can prove that he is the most dominant athlete in his sport and an Olympic great.
The only competitor that will challenge Phelps is his own teammate Ryan Lochte—this will be a rivalry to watch.
Serena Williams, Tennis
4 of 5Tennis stars have not always been a fan of the Olympics since they are so close to the US Open, but this year it doesn't matter. Most of the top tennis players will compete this year to fulfill the desire of an Olympic gold.
Serena Williams will be participating in singles and defending her doubles gold with her sister, Venus Williams.
Serena gives America their best chance to win the gold since Venus won in 2000. After winning the Family Circle Cup over the weekend, Williams is only picking up steam as the Summer Olympics approach.
USA Men's Basketball
5 of 5The redeem team is back after a stellar performance in the World Games and an Olympic gold in 2008.
This team has so many athletes and MVP winners that it would be hard to see them losing to any team.
With legendary Coach Krzyzewski holding the clipboard, the men's Olympic team are strong contenders to become gold medalists again. With players like Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Carmelo Anthony, we can expect a lot of high-scoring games and numerous highlights.
Can this team be better than the 1994 Dream Team who brought the gold home that year?
