Toronto Blue Jays: Sergio Santos Blows Another Save Opportunity to Red Sox

Bill FordJun 7, 2018

Toronto Blue Jays closer Sergio Santos blew his second save this season to the Boston Red Sox on Monday night.

In the ninth inning, Santos entered the game with a one-run lead against Boston. Dustin Pedroia hit a leadoff double off of Santos, which led to the eventual collapse.

Blue Jays catcher J.P. Arencibia allowed Pedroia to get to third base with a passed ball. Adrian Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly that scored Pedroia, tying the game.

Santos seemed rattled and lost control on the mound, walking two batters and then giving up an RBI single.

The Red Sox would go on to win the game 4-2 in Toronto's home opener.

Santos received a great deal of hype during the offseason and into spring training. In two save opportunities this season, he has blown both.

Although that may appear to be bad, it is important to remember that this is much too early in the season to be overly concerned. There is plenty of baseball, and there is plenty of time to make up for mistakes.

Every game of the regular season is important and significant. We learned that especially at the end of the 2011 season in the final game of the regular season.

Many teams ended up playing the final 162nd game of the regular season as if it were actually a playoff game, deciding whether or not they would make it into the postseason.

Santos may not have looked great Monday night, but have faith that he will overcome and perform consistently.

Major League Baseball is only going into the fifth game of the season. There will be many ups and downs throughout the season for all teams, but in the end, the Blue Jays will be one of the toughest teams in the AL East.
