Madden 2013: Rob Gronkowski Solidifies Cover Status After Promotional Video

Rob Gronkowski is one of the most popular players in the NFL, whether he's bowling through defenders en route to a touchdown or posing for pictures with an adult film star.

So, let's be honest: He didn't really need much of a lift in the Madden '13 cover vote.

But when Gronkowski released a promotional video—complete with a doll of his competitor in the third round of the bracket, Calvin Johnson—it was over.

In the video, after doing 1,001 push-ups, Gronkowski tells the Megatron Transformers doll the following:

"Not only did I lead the league in touchdown receptions, I also have a rushing TD, and you're challenging me in 'Madden.' You're crazy, let's play."

"

Gronkowski proceeds to un-pause his own Madden game between his Patriots and the Detroit Lions, then proceeds to catch a touchdown in the end zone, while yelling, "Gronk spike!" and slamming little Megatron to the ground.

Such brutality in the game of virtual football.

Gronkowski's first-round opponent in the Madden cover vote, Brandon Lloyd, didn't stand a chance; Gronkowski beat him 85 percent to 15 percent. Then came Minnesota Vikings All-Pro defensive end Jared Allen, whom Gronk beat 65 percent to 35 percent.

Now, it's Johnson's turn.

Johnson won't be as easy an out as Lloyd and Allen were, though. After all, he did have more than 1,600 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. But Gronkowski's latest marketing ploy will prove to be the difference.

Gronk has become somewhat of a pop culture icon since his emergence last season. Not only is he highly entertaining but he also drew in hardcore football fans who appreciated his work ethic and determination on the field.

Right now, Gronk is an unstoppable force, both on and off the field, and he showed that by destroying Megatron before the vote was even tallied.
