2012 NFL Draft: Latest Buzz from Around the NFL

Ryan PhillipsApr 9, 2012

With the NFL draft fast approaching, rumors about who will go where and which teams will target which players have been coming fast and furious. Here is the latest buzz from around the league about the 2012 NFL draft.

Jacksonville Jaguars looking at receivers

The Jacksonville Jaguars are set at running back with Maurice Jones-Drew, and they drafted what they thought would be their quarterback of the future in Blaine Gabbert during last year's first round. All the remains is to get an elite wide receiver, and the Jags would have the makings of a solid offense.

The problem for Jacksonville is that the draft's top receiver, Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon, won't get by the St. Louis Rams at No. 6, and the Jaguars own the draft's seventh pick.

The Florida Times-Union thinks the Jaguars are likely to select a receiver early in the draft and then opt to sign another in free agency. That doesn't mean the team will go with a receiver with their first-round pick, but Notre Dame's Michael Floyd could certainly be a target at No. 7.

Neither Laurent Robinson nor Mike Thomas are worthy of being called a No. 1 receiver, so Jacksonville still needs to find a guy to fit that designation.

New York Jets looking at several options in first round

The Jets are sitting at No. 16 in the first round and may not be able to get any of the guys they really covet. Michael Floyd could be gone by the time the Jets are on the clock, and Melvin Ingram—who the team reportedly loves—could be the first pass-rusher to come off the board.

The third player who looks like a fit for the Jets would be Alabama safety Mark Barron, but there is almost no chance he gets past the Dallas Cowboys (No. 14) and Philadelphia Eagles (No. 15).

The Jets could be sitting at No. 16 with their favorite targets off the board and with nowhere to turn. Alabama's Courtney Upshaw would give the team a rugged, strong edge-rusher, but New York could look to trade down if Floyd, Ingram and Barron are gone.

Philadelphia Eagles wide open at No. 15

The Philadelphia Eagles announced that they re-signed defensive tackle Derek Landri on Monday morning, but that doesn't necessarily mean the team won't look to add a defensive tackle with the 15th pick in this year's draft.

In my latest mock, I have Philadelphia grabbing Barron at No. 15, but really the team could go in a number of different directions. With guys like Michael Brockers and Fletcher Cox possibly available, the Eagles could get value at that position.

Thanks to doing a great job in free agency over the past two years and landing DeMeco Ryans via trade, the Eagles may have the luxury of taking the best player available to add depth. Cornerback, receiver, defensive tackle and linebacker are the spots Philly could use help at.

Denver Broncos likely to grab developmental quarterback early

The Broncos landed a big fish when they brought in Peyton Manning this offseason, but other than Caleb Hanie, they don't have anything behind him on the roster. Clearly, Manning won't be around that long, so the team probably has to draft a quarterback at some point this year.

According to the Denver Post, a group from the team recently visited Tempe to put Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweiler through a workout.

That group included vice president John Elway, head coach John Fox, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, quarterbacks coach Adam Gase and general manager Brian Xanders.

The Broncos almost certainly won't take Osweiler at No. 25, but he could still be on the board at No. 57, or they could elect to trade up to the top of the second round to make sure they land him.
