2012 NFL Draft: Latest News, Buzz and Rumors from Around the League

Zach KruseJun 7, 2018

With the 2012 NFL draft less than three weeks away, let's take a look at all the latest news and rumors from around the league, including if the Miami Dolphins want to move up and the possibility of the Philadelphia Eagles taking an early-round quarterback.

Dolphins Staying Put?

There has been talk about the Dolphins possibly moving up to the No. 3 overall spot, likely in an effort to get Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill before another quarterback-needy team snags him first. But according to Sports llustrated's Peter King, the Dolphins aren't likely to make that move.

"They badly would like to have the option," King tweeted. "But I don't see Miami trading for the pick."

The Cleveland Browns, at No. 4 overall, look like the one team that would take Tannehill before the Dolphins select four picks later. It's a risk to wait, but there's a good chance Tannehill will be there for them at No. 8 regardless.

Eagles Want a QB Early?

According to King, the Philadelphia Eagles may be targeting a quarterback with the draft pick they acquired in the Kevin Kolb trade last offseason.

"The Eagles have the 51st overall pick, courtesy of the Kevin Kolb deal last year, along with the 46th pick," King wrote in his Monday Morning Quarterback. "I can see Andy Reid going developmental quarterback with one of those picks."

With Michael Vick on the other side of 30 and always a risk to get injured, the Eagles would be wise to invest another high pick on a backup option. It doesn't appear as if there's an Andy Dalton/Kolb in this class, however, which could make finding a fit in the second round difficult for Reid and company.

No Surprise Here

The Jacksonville Jaguars are one NFL team that desperately needs to add a receiver or two during the 2012 NFL draft, so it came as no surprise when the Florida Times-Union reported that Jacksonville is likely to take a receiver early in a couple of weeks.

"The Jaguars are likely to select a receiver early in the draft and might sign another in free agency," wrote Vito Stellino.

Jacksonville could select either Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon or Notre Dame's Michael Floyd with the No. 7 overall pick, but the draft is deep enough at receiver that a playmaker could be found in the second or third round.

Either way, look for one of the Jaguars' first three picks to include a receiver. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert won't make any progress throwing to the kind of receiving targets he had in 2011.

Manning's Backup on the Way?

According to the Denver Post, the Broncos had a large number of important eyes at Arizona State quarterback Brock Osweilier's workout last Friday.

Mike Klis reported that vice president John Elway, head coach John Fox, offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, general manager Brian Xanders and quarterbacks coach Adam Gase were all expected to be in attendance for Osweiler's showcase in Tempe.

The 6'8" quarterback would make a sensible long-term option at quarterback, as the Broncos aren't likely to get more than three or so years from Peyton Manning. Given a few years behind a Hall of Famer, Osweiler could prove to be a valuable pick for the Broncos' future in the second or third round.

Wilson the No. 2 back?

There's no discussion on who the No. 1 overall back in the 2012 NFL draft is, but everything behind Alabama's Trent Richardson is clearly up for debate. One noted film guru gave his thoughts on the battle to be the draft's No. 2 back this past weekend.

Greg Cosell, executive producer of NFL Matchup and senior producer for NFL Films, tweeted that Virginia Tech's David Wilson might be the second-best back in this year's class.

"

Explosive element. Also ran with velocity inside. Balance, body control. Speed to perimeter. Smooth accelerator. My No. 2 back behind Trent Richardson.

"

Even if NFL teams agree, being the No. 2 back doesn't guarantee Wilson a spot in the first round. While Richardson looks like a top-10 pick, Wilson can still expect to hear his name called early in Day 2. Several teams make sense for Wilson at the top of the second round, including the Cleveland Browns (given they don't take Richardson) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
