Michael Floyd: One of the Biggest Wild Cards of the First Round
Last week, Notre Dame WR Michael Floyd had a pro day that put him in consideration to be taken as the draft's first wide receiver off of the board ahead of Oklahoma State's Justin Blackmon. It isn't even a stretch to put him in the draft's top 10 picks, and Floyd's travel itinerary reflects that.
After already meeting with the Carolina Panthers (picking ninth), and Cleveland Browns (fourth and 22nd), Floyd will be very busy over the next two weeks. The St. Louis Rams (sixth), New York Jets (16th), Cincinnati Bengals (17th and 21st) and Tennessee Titans (20th) will host Floyd this week.
Next week he'll visit the Minnesota Vikings (third), Miami Dolphins (eighth), Arizona Cardinals (13th) and San Francisco 49ers (30th). Floyd has also been invited to the NFL draft.
We can rule out the 49ers unless they make a move into the top 15 picks to catch a falling Floyd, which would take at least their 2013 first-round pick to accomplish. The Titans would also require a trade up, and the Bengals likely would too. The Browns and Vikings would be looking to Floyd in a trade-down scenario.
That leaves natural picks anywhere from the Rams (No. 6) to the Jets (No. 16) as a representation of Floyd's likely pick range in the first. The Rams could also be looking at Floyd as a target post-trade down, but without a No. 1 (or No. 2) wide receiver, they could be directly evaluating Floyd as an alternative to Blackmon. The Dolphins and Panthers also have immediate and long-term needs at wide receiver.
Between the number of teams that could be looking at Floyd as a trade-up or trade-down target, the growing number of teams considering Floyd at their natural pick, and the usual absolute value of a size/speed receiver like Floyd residing in the top 10-15 picks, it is getting harder to predict his landing spot every day.
The one thing we do know is that his stock is only trending up at this important time.
