Masters 2012 Leaderboard: Recapping All the Action from Saturday

Richard LangfordApr 7, 2012

This is not how things were supposed to work out on moving day at the 2012 Masters. The two golfers people expected to be applying pressure to the rest of the field fell even further off the pace.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy both struggled at Augusta on Saturday, and they are well off the nine-under pace set by Peter Hanson.

Hanson will take a lead into Sunday at Augusta after shooting a spectacular seven-under 65 on Saturday. Right behind Hanson is a man who proved some golfers were ready to live up to their expectations.

Phil Mickelson caught fire on the back nine and posted a six-under 66. That dropped his score to eight under, and he is alone in second place.

Meanwhile, Woods made some noise early, but problems with his driver again derailed him. He finished with an even-par 72 and is three over for the tourney.

His faulty tee work was more than his temper could handle. He had a little tantrum after hitting a bad tee shot on the par-three 16th, and booted his club.

And through all of that, he had a much better day on the course than Rory McIlroy. In a round that came dangerously close to the 80 he posted on Sunday at last year's Masters, McIlroy fired a 77.

He put together a couple of decent stretches, but was just far too errant to succeed. He is now at one over for the event.

No one had a more up-and-down round than 52-year-old Fred Couples. He entered the day with a share of the lead, but that quickly turned to a memory as he bogeyed his first two holes. He also added a double on No. 5.

He turned that spotty play around and didn't pick up another bogey while carding three birdies through hole No. 14, but then bogeyed the 15th and 16th. He finished with a 75 and is now in 12th place at two under.
