The Rock's Next WWE Feud & Match

Justin LaBarJun 6, 2018

One crowd arousing entrance and an F5—how quickly The Rock is no longer in the front our minds.

I don't think Brock Lesnar's climactic finish to RAW is any knock on the relevance of The Rock, simply a compliment to Lesnar and acknowledgment of how wrestling fans are always looking for the next big surprise or “thing.”

The Rock will be back. If you ask him, he hasn't left, at least that's what he'll say in his next promo in his next appearance on RAW.

The next appearance on RAW will likely be sometime in the summer to build to SummerSlam 2012.

So what does he do when returning?

The memorable part of his speech the night after WrestleMania 28 was his mention of going after the WWE championship in the future. To me, that seems like the likely reason he would make his return at all the next time he does. It makes the most sense and provides the most intrigue.

We just spent the last year with The Rock involved in a grudge match with Cena. Having a heel, like The Miz, randomly call him out or interrupt him in a few months to lead to a match...wake me up when it's over.

WWE championship match is the way to go.

The stakes of The Rock's name once again involved in a championship match is appealing to WWE brass—they juggled the idea of making his WrestleMania 28 match with Cena for the title for much of 2011.

The Rock vs. CM Punk will be for the WWE title at SummerSlam 2012 in Los Angeles.

CM Punk has openly spoken out against “Dwayne” and his Hollywood attitude and the dynamics write themselves.

CM Punk can talk about the grind he endured before and with WWE to get to the top spot he's in. He isn't going to let some movie star come back to take that spot just because he has some free time in between movies.

The Rock will tell CM Punk that he was dropping pipe bombs on Jabroni's when CM Punk was still a little freshman outcast with dyed red hair.

So, The Rock challenges for the WWE title at SummerSlam. Does he win?

No.

He went over John Cena, which helped justify his attitude and ability to say the night after WrestleMania he is going to be WWE champion again, but capturing the title at SummerSlam isn't the right time.

The Rock puts over CM Punk, which would be a good rub for Punk.

The Rock returns again to try and complete, what by this time would be a year long goal, of winning the title one more time. In order to do that, he will have to beat the Champion at that time, Brock Lesnar.

Brock vs. Rock at WrestleMania 29 with the title on the line.

CM Punk has beaten The Rock on the big stage—something Cena couldn't do—which would lead to another Cena/CM Punk feud if they ever needed it again.

Months ago I had said that there were two names I could see The Rock battling at SummerSlam 2012—CM Punk or Alberto Del Rio. Del Rio intrigues me because he is a classic heel, WWE is determined to push him to the moon and SummerSlam in LA with The Rock against a big Mexican star/athlete—it fits the way WWE thinks.

However, I am convinced the next match for The Rock will be for WWE title, so Del Rio would have to have the title in order to face The Rock. Again, The Rock puts over Del Rio, it's the rub for Del Rio's career that WWE has had in mind from the beginning.

Yup, The Rock challenges for the WWE title at both SummerSlam and WrestleMania 29. Brock Lesnar holds the belt going in to WrestleMania 29. It pays to be a part-timer with an established name outside of the squared circle.

These are the times we live in!
