WWE News: Steve Austin's Return Would Make WrestleMania 29 Biggest Event Ever

Adam WellsJun 2, 2018

WWE fans have been itching to see Steve Austin lace up the boots one more time since he was forced to retire in 2003. Vince McMahon is doing everything he can to make that happen at WrestleMania 29.

According to a report from Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com, the tentative plan for next year's show is to have Austin return for a match with CM Punk.

The WWE has pulled out all the stops over the last two years to ensure that WrestleMania at least comes close to breaking the company buyrate record, which is currently held by WrestleMania 23 with 1.2 million buys.

Bringing back the biggest star of the biggest era in wrestling would guarantee WrestleMania 29 at least matches the record that was set in 2007.

The fact that the match would be against Punk is a win-win for WWE, because it would put Punk on a stage the likes of which he has never been. He has done some big programs, most notably with John Cena last July, but nothing on this scale.

Not to take anything away from Cena, but he isn't at Austin's level. Even if Austin isn't the wrestler he used to be, and there is little chance of that, we know that he can still cut promos and sell a match.

Punk is the perfect opponent for Austin because he has the athletic ability to carry a match. What's more, he will want it to be great because of his love and respect for the former WWE champion.

Austin is like The Rock: He still has that ability to draw an audience even after being gone for so long.

There are not a lot of game-changing stars left for the WWE to bring back who will sell a lot of shows. Austin is the biggest fish in the barrel, and his potential presence on the WrestleMania 29 card would make the fans ecstatic. The WWE would draw the kind of box office they seek every year.
