Masters Odds 2012: Rory McIlroy Right to Laugh off 2011's Collapse at Augusta

Ryan RudnanskyJun 7, 2018

Rory McIlroy's collapse in the final round of the Masters last year was no laughing matter.

He held a four-stroke lead headed into the final frame, then proceeded to shoot an eight-over-par 80 at Augusta.

The difference this year is that McIlroy is the No. 2 golfer in the world and he's become much more composed.

Addressing his meltdown at Augusta last year, McIlroy said on Tuesday, via the Daily Mail:

"

"I can't believe how close the cabins are, I mean they are only 50 yards from the tee. It's great to be able to laugh about it now."

"

And McIlroy should be laughing about concerns he will fall apart again this year. After his loss at the 2011 Masters, he went on to post four top-six finishes in seven PGA Tour events, including his record-breaking victory at the U.S. Open.

In 2012, McIlroy has picked up where he left off, placing in the top five in all five tournaments he's been in. He has top-three finishes in each of his three PGA Tour events, including a victory at the Honda Classic (12-under-par 268).

McIlroy is right where he needs to be heading into Augusta this year. His confidence remains high after last year's U.S. Open and his play on the links reflects that.

McIlroy said, via the Mail:

"

"Last year I came here with the hope of doing well and maybe have a chance to win. This year I'm coming here with the attitude that I want to win. I'd like to think I'm the same person as last year but there will definitely be a big difference in approach."

"

The reality is McIlroy simply isn't the same golfer who walked onto Augusta National last year.

He is much improved and began to realize his potential after his monumental victory at Congressional Country Club.

The rest of the playing field would like to think McIlroy will collapse in the closing round at Augusta this year, but everyone knows deep down that won't happen.
