Real Madrid vs. Apoel Nicosia: Rout Proves Real Will Roll over Bayern Munich

Ryan RudnanskyApr 4, 2012

Bayern Munich is certainly no slouch, but Real Madrid proved with its route of APOEL Nicosia on Wednesday that there is simply no stopping Cristiano Ronaldo and company.

In their 5-2 victory over APOEL, Ronaldo scored two goals and Real held the ball for 70 percent of the match, demonstrating explosiveness and composure on the pitch throughout. APOEL tried to make it a game with a goal in the 67th minute, but Real stormed back, outscoring its foe, 3-1, down the stretch.

In the rout, Real got off 21 shots to APOEL's nine, reminding everyone what the club could do offensively.

Real has racked up an astounding 100 goals in La Liga this season, with a goal difference of 73. Ronaldo has done the majority of the scoring with 37 goals, but Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema have 20 goals and 17 goals, respectively. It's more than a one-man attack, which makes Real even more dangerous.

It doesn't help that Jose Mourinho is now the head coach of Real—the same man whose Inter Milan squad defeated Bayern in the 2010 Champions League final, 2-0.

Mourinho said, via Yahoo! Sports, "They are basically the same team I played two years ago with Inter Milan."

Of course, Bayern knew who Real was all along. It wasn't exactly a surprise that five goals swung into the net on Wednesday. It is Real's defining feature this season, and everyone knows it.

While there is hope for Bayern in the semifinals (Real had some uncharacteristic lapses on defense against APOEL), it's still hard to imagine the club outscoring Real. Even if Bayern somehow limits Ronaldo and Co., it still may not be enough to come out on top.

In the end, it's an uphill battle on an uneven playing field, complete with a coach in Mourinho who knows his opponent like the back of his hand. That doesn't bode well for Munich's pride and joy.
