WWE Smackdown Preview: Spoiler-Included Analysis of This Week's Show (April 6)

Drake OzApr 5, 2012

Bye-bye, WrestleMania 28. Hello, Extreme Rules.

Now that the WWE's biggest pay-per-view of the year is behind us, we can officially start looking forward to those not-so-imporant PPVs (just kidding...kinda).

The next PPV is Extreme Rules, and the road to that show started with Monday's huge episode of Raw, but it will continue tomorrow night with the first post-WrestleMania 28 edition of Smackdown.

As we all know, Smackdown is taped, so we can take a look at what's going to happen before it actually airs on TV. And that's exactly what we're going to do today.

I'm going to provide you guys with full spoilers for tomorrow night's episode and then analyze three things that I thing I'm going to like about it and three things that I think I'm going to dislike.

Let's get to it. Here is your spoiler-included analysis of the April 6th edition of Friday Night Smackdown.

Full Spoilers for Friday's Episode

1 of 7

Here are the full, detailed spoilers for tonight's episode of Friday Night Smackdown, courtesy of Prowrestling.net:

John Laurinaitis brought Teddy Long out to offer him a job. He said you can take your job and shove it. Johnny mentioned Teddy's grandkids need it for college. The crowd booed him badly. Johnny offered the job on only one condition to say Johnny is better than him. Teddy gave in and told Johnny you're better than me. Then he sent Teddy to the back to start his undisclosed job. Laurinaitis announced the handicap match that followed.

1. Mark Henry and David Otunga defeated R-Truth. Truth beat up Otunga with an array of moves. Henry came in and Otunga screamed to let him pin Truth.

2. Randy Orton defeated Kane in a No DQ match. Orton DDT'd Kane on a chair. Kane attempted a chokeslam on the chair, Orton RKO'd him on it instead and got the win.

There was a National Guard moment and everyone screamed USA.

3. Ryback beat Barry Stevens. Three moves and the match was over.

Daniel Bryan was interviewed. The crowd screamed "Yes! Yes! Yes!" Bryan broke it up by yelling at AJ about the kiss at WrestleMania 28.

4. Big Show beat Heath Slater. Cody Rhodes was on commentary. The segment started with the Cody Rhodes embarrassing moment. Show won with a punch, a spear, and a chokeslam. Cody got up and tried to get in the ring, but Show ran him off. Show did the WMD on Slater. Cody tried to run in, but ran back to the locker room.

A video recapped the CM Punk and Chris Jericho segment from Raw.

5. Nikki Bella beat Beth Phoenix in a non-title match. Kelly Kelly interfered and Nikki got the win.

There was a John Cena flashback from WrestleMania, and then a recap of the Brock Lesnar return from Raw.

6. Alberto Del Rio defeated Sheamus by DQ. Del Rio grabbed a chair while the ref wasn't looking. Sheamus grabbed the chair and when the ref turned around, Del Rio acted like he had been hit with it, so the referee disqualified Sheamus. Afterward, Sheamus got mad and nailed the ref with a Brogue Kick.

Like: Randy Orton vs. Kane in a No DQ Match

If you've followed my writing at all on the road to WrestleMania, then you know that I've been a big critic of the feud between Kane and Randy Orton.

But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy watching them wrestle.

While their WrestleMania match was just OK, the last time they faced off in a match with no disqualifications came last summer when Orton beat Kane in a great Street Fight on Smackdown. Thus, I could see Friday's No DQ match being really good as well.

Since Kane isn't the best technical wrestler out there, he thrives more in these types of matches, and he and Orton should deliver the goods tomorrow night.

Their No DQ bout should be much better than their WrestleMania match, and it should also be nice to see Orton get the win because I hated creative's decision to have him lose at 'Mania.

Dislike: Beth Phoenix Losing...Again

3 of 7

The creative team has done a horrible job of booking Beth Phoenix as Divas Champion.

She has consistently claimed on Twitter that she has no competition. Yet just this week, she was pinned by Maria Menounous at WrestleMania and will lose to, of all people, Nikkie Bella on this week's Smackdown.

Really? Does anyone in the WWE actually think it's smart to book Nikki over Beth, even if it is a non-title match?

Most wrestling fans couldn't care less about Nikki and are anxiously awaiting a Beth/Natalya or Beth/Kharma feud, but instead, what we've gotten are two terrible losses for Beth in a week's span.

And people within WWE probably still wonder why hardly anyone cares about the Divas division.

Like: Alberto Del Rio vs. Sheamus

A match between Sheamus and Ablerto Del Rio? I approve.

The WWE started building up the tension between these two on Monday's Raw, and now, they're set to wrestle to a controversial finish on Friday's Smackdown.

It seems that the creative team is either going to insert ADR into the Daniel Bryan-Sheamus feud for the World Heavyweight Championship or they're setting up Sheamus' next World title feud.

Either way, I'm a fan of Del Rio's ring work (though, not too much of anything else), so I like that he's going to face Sheamus in the Smackdown main event.

Assuming it gets a decent amount of time, it should be a really good match, and Smackdown is the place where I expect to see quality matches on a consistent basis.

Dislike: No Interaction Between Daniel Bryan and Sheamus

5 of 7

Judging by these spoilers, we aren't going to see any interaction between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan on tomorrow's Smackdown.

Well, that's dumb.

Considering that Sheamus beat Bryan in just 18 seconds to win the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 28, you would think that Bryan would be pissed and either want an immediate rematch or at least look for some sort of revenge on Sheamus.

But it looks like they're not even going to cross paths on Smackdown, which is a creative move that I really have to question.

Sheamus and Bryan are supposed to still be feuding over the World title, but it seems as if creative completely forgot about that when booking this week's show.

Like: The Debut/Return of Ryback

6 of 7

Skip Sheffield will return to TV tomorrow night under his "Ryback" gimmick, and I'm actually pretty stoked about it.

I may be in the minority here, but I thought Sheffield had a lot of potential when he was with the Nexus (and on NXT), and it was an unfortunate situation to see him go down with that devastating injury.

But now, Sheffield comes back as Ryback on Friday's Smackdown for a chance to turn his career around.

While I'm getting kind of sick of seeing debuting/returning superstars squash people instead of being immediately inserted into storylines, I'm excited to see what the future holds for Ryback.

A lot of fans will write him off right away, but the dude has talent, and I'm willing to see where creative takes him.

Dislike: Keeping Teddy Long on TV

7 of 7

The entire purpose of having John Laurinaitis' squad beat Teddy Long's team at WrestleMania 28 was to remove Long from TV.

I have nothing personal against Teddy, but it's just that he's been on Smackdown for so long that he's gotten extremely stale, and thus, I was happy to see him go.

Or so I thought.

At the beginning of this week's Smackdown, Laurinaitis will appoint Long to an unidentified position, meaning that we're likely still going to see him on Smackdown each and every week.

Umm, doesn't that essentially make Team Johnny vs. Team Teddy completely pointless?

I get that Long is no longer the Smackdown GM, but it looks like he's still going to be on TV, which totally defeats the purpose of that WrestleMania match.

Note: As part of the new WWE blog, I'll be asking all of the B/R wrestling readers for questions for a new mailbag that I will post on Fridays. It will be a slideshow featuring 10-20 questions and answers on a wide range of topics. You can submit questions either through Formspring or Twitter, and the best ones will be answered in the B/R mailbag.
