Fantasy Baseball Sleepers 2012: Late-Rounders Ready to Explode

Ryan RudnanskyApr 4, 2012

There's nothing like finding a diamond in the rough in the final rounds of your fantasy baseball draft.

While everyone's loading up on big names in the early rounds, you simply sip your beverage of choice and calmly wait for the deep sleeper that will make it all worthwhile.

As the 2012 baseball season kicks off tonight at Marlins Park, here's a look at some sleepers for those of you who are drafting late.

New York Yankees v. Chicago Cubs

3. Logan Morrison, OF, Miami Marlins

Logan Morrison was selected in the 22nd round of the 2005 MLB draft, but don't let that fool you. He was one of the top prospects in baseball in the Marlins farm system, and he's just beginning to realize his potential.

Morrison hit .247 with 23 home runs and 72 RBI in his second major league season, but he has so much potential. He will be hitting in a revamped Marlins lineup with the opportunity to shine, and I expect him to break through this season.

2. Dee Gordon, SS, Los Angeles Dodgers

The rest of baseball may not have caught on, but Dodgers fans certainly know who Dee Gordon is. In 56 games last season, Gordon hit .304 with 34 runs and 24 stolen bases.

He's a lightning-quick athlete who can hit for average and use his legs to be a terror on the basepaths. At a thin position, Gordon could be one of the biggest steals of the year...literally.

1. Ike Davis, 1B, New York Mets

Ike Davis was headed for a breakout season last year before an ankle injury took him off the field. He hit .302 with seven home runs, 25 RBI and 20 runs in just 129 at-bats. Over the full course of a season, Davis has the potential to be one of the best first basemen in fantasy baseball.

If Davis can stay healthy, the sky's the limit. He hit his third home run in his last three games on Wednesday against the New York Yankees. I don't even consider him a late-rounder, but he's being drafted there.
