New Nike NFL Uniforms Expert Analysis

Chris TrapassoJun 6, 2018

Nike's unveiling of the new NFL uniforms were the talk of sports nation yesterday and certainly had thousands of football fans and members of the media reacting instantly on Twitter.

I love the Seahawks' new look, but as you probably know by now, the other 31 jerseys stayed relatively the same. I wasn't expecting drastic alterations, but the whole event fell a tad short of my expectations.

But don't take my word for it.

I've gathered some of the funnier, more insightful and expert opinions on NFL's fresh threads.

Got to start with uniform guru Paul Lukas of UniWatch.com and ESPN.com's Page 2. He was in New York City for the unveiling. Here's what he had to say about the Seattle Seahawks' new look:

"

The Seahawks were the one team that agreed to put their uniform into the Nike design centrifuge. Your assessment of the results probably depends on (A) whether you view football as a video game played by comic book superheroes in costumes, or as a sport played by human beings in uniforms, and (B) your tolerance for neon green.

Uni Watch doesn't much care for the new look, but the team's old look was nothing to write home about either, so it's no great loss. In the grand scheme of things, call it a push.

"

B/R's AFC East blogger Erik Frenz completed a quick write-up on the Patriots, Jets, Bills and Dolphins jersey tweaks:

"

The only noteworthy changes were to the Patriots' pants, which are now white. Also, the collars on the Bills' uniforms are blue at the base of the neck and are white as they reach the shoulder.

Oh, and of course, there's the swoosh, which will invariably have crazed NFL fans running to their local apparel stores to purchase the goods.

And for those who recently purchased Reebok gear, my sincere condolences, but look at it this way: At least now, you have a collector's item.

"

CBSSports' Will Brinson pieced together an astute column about the new jerseys, saying that the biggest impact will be in unseen details and technology.

Says Brinson:

"

The new technology that Nike's employing for the jerseys is a big deal as well, and there are many subtle changes that fans won't see that players will appreciate.

"Our overall approach in just about anything we make is 'How can we make this lighter? How can we make it perform better?'" Nike Creative Director for Football Todd Van Horne told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.

To that extent, Nike made serious changes to the uniforms relative to their predecessors. Additionally, Nike wanted to create more unique padding on the uniforms—fans will notice slightly raised and indented thigh padding in addition to padding on the rear of the pants.

Speed, flexibility, comfort and weight are all things that Nike's tried to emphasize in their products over the years. And it was clear from the players' reactions that they achieved precisely that with the 2012 jersey update.

"

He finishes, in a different column, about the future of the Nike jerseys and what they'll do with the ever-popular throwbacks:

"

Throwbacks weren't discussed much in the wake of the new jerseys. However, Nike's Creative Director of Football Todd Van Horne said that throwback jerseys are absolutely something Nike's talked about with teams and they will eventually come down the pipe for teams that want them.

"Some of it is yet to come," Van Horne said Tuesday. "The NFL has very strong rules about what happens on the third jersey and alternate colors. So a lot of that is individual and team choice about what's going to happen."

Every team announced the release of a home jersey and an away jersey on Tuesday; many teams also produced a third, alternate jersey. (All of them could have even announced one—at this point, everything in my brain is a random shade of teal, so it's hard to tell what's what.)

"

I'm not sure how much Nike will be able to change the throwback unis, but those are something for which I'm truly excited.
