UFC and MMA History: Where Are the Gracies Now?
If it were not for the Gracie family, the UFC might not exist today, and MMA would likely not be what it is today.
Rorion Gracie helped found the UFC, and Royce helped put jiu-jitsu on the map as he won UFC 1, 2 and 4.
The Gracies are, without a doubt, the most iconic family in MMA, and many have competed in fights in the Octagon and around the world.
Let's take a look at where some of them are today.
Renzo Gracie
1 of 6Renzo Gracie last fought at UFC 112 against Matt Hughes back in April 2010, where he lost at 4:40 of the third and final round.
Renzo has not officially retired, though it is more than likely that the TKO loss to Hughes will be the last fight of Renzo's career. His record is 13-7-1.
Today, he trains fighters at his gym, the Renzo Gracie Academy.
Roger Gracie
2 of 6Roger Gracie is one of the few Gracies who is still currently fighting.
Roger is 4-1 in his MMA career, and went 4-0 before dropping a first round knockout to Muhammed Lawal at a Strikeforce event in 2011.
Roger has now decided to drop to the middleweight division, and will begin training at Team Black House.
Royce Gracie
3 of 6Without a doubt, Royce Gracie is the most iconic member of the Gracie family.
Royce is 14-2-3 in his MMA career, and he started his career going 11-0, with 11 submission victories inside the Octagon. He still holds the record for most submission wins in the UFC.
These days, Royce does not consider himself to be retired, and even considered a return to the Octagon for UFC 134, the UFC's first visit to Brazil since '98.
His profile is still on the UFC's official website, where he is listed as a middleweight.
Ralph Gracie
4 of 6Ralph Gracie never saw the inside of the Octagon, but he did fight in Pride twice.
He made his debut when he was 4-0 and won his first match in the ring. Then, in his second effort, he was TKO'd in just six seconds by Takanori Gomi.
He has not fought since.
Ralph currently has four academies in the San Francisco area, and two in Orange County.
Royler Gracie
5 of 6Royler Gracie has had 11 MMA fights, where he went 5-5-1 with four submission victories.
He last fought the past September, where he lost a decision to Masakatsu Ueda. Royler had announced it would be his final fight prior to the bout.
You may recognize Royler from his guest appearance on the MTV series Wildboyz, where he choked out co-star Chris Pontius, and one of his female students put Steve-O in an armbar.
Ryron Gracie
6 of 6Ryron Gracie may have never seen the inside of an MMA cage, but he has certainly made a name for himself outside the cage.
Ryron is a fifth-degree BJJ black belt, and recently started a website known as the "Gracie University," where members can learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu online and earn rank from Ryron and his brothers.
