The Rock vs. John Cena: Bout Proved Rock Has Mainstream Appeal Cena Can't Touch

Timothy RappJun 1, 2018

I'm not going to lie to you people—I'm not really a wrestling fan, and I haven't been for quite some time. It's just not my thing anymore.

Which is why the fact that I actually cared about WrestleMania at all this year is a big deal. But more importantly, I only cared because The Rock was returning to the ring, an old favorite of mine.

Wrestling fans may despise The Rock for turning to Hollywood, and I get that, but he is able to draw in a different, larger crowd than John Cena ever will be able to.

And it's not just because people watch his movies (which generally suck)—it's because, in the ring, The Rock is the sort of performer Cena will never be.

When I woke up this morning, I immediately wondered, Did they let The Rock win? How did he end up winning? Did he do "The People's Elbow?" Was there interference? Will The Rock keep wrestling, at least in a limited capacity? Does the WWE need a presence like The Rock again?

I would never think those things about John Cena or, really, any other wrestler in the WWE today. They aren't the electric entertainers The Rock was in his prime, and they don't draw the intrigue of old wrestling fans or people simply curious to see how the man they now know as an actor performs in the ring.

For one night at least, The Rock made me—and a lot of people like me—care about wrestling again. He brought an appeal to the event that only performers like he, or Hulk Hogan to name one, are able to generate.

John Cena most certainly isn't capable of that type of appeal. And I doubt he ever will be.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets will remain Linsane in tribute.
