NFL Draft Rumors: Breaking Down Ryan Tannehill's Likely Landing Spots
According to virtually all reports, Ryan Tannehill aced his pro day and now has several teams interested in his services as the 2012 NFL draft approaches.
The Cleveland Browns have maintained interest in the Texas A&M quarterback throughout the draft process and plan to get to know him very well before draft day on April 26. The Browns have two picks in the first round of this year's draft (No. 4 and No. 22), and though they have publicly remained committed to Colt McCoy, his ceiling isn't close to as high as Tannehill's.
While ESPN's Todd McShay says Tannehill is a legitimate Top-10 pick, I don't believe the Browns will take him with the No. 4 pick. That means they would have to pray he's available at No. 22, which probably won't happen.
The Miami Dolphins hold the No. 8 pick in the draft and they also have Mike Sherman (Tannehill's former head coach) on staff as their offensive coordinator. Miami has a desperate situation at quarterback right now, with only Matt Moore and the recently signed David Garrard as legitimate starting options.
The Dolphins need a long-term solution under center. While Tannehill is a project who will likely need to sit for a year or two, he would give the team a solid option and a guy to build around. While Miami has other needs, grabbing a future franchise quarterback at No. 8 wouldn't be a reach if they really believe in Tannehill.
While Miami and Cleveland are the most likely landing spots for the Texas A&M product, the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs are also kicking the tires on him. The Eagles have the 15th pick in the first round and, if what we're hearing about Tannehill's stock is true, he probably won't be around then.
The Chiefs have the 11th pick and may have a shot at him, and with Matt Cassel having struggled for the team, adding Tannehill wouldn't be that strange.
There is also a chance that a team without an immediate quarterback need could select Tannehill as a developmental project, like the Green Bay Packers did with Aaron Rodgers in 2005.
Tannehill's wildly successful pro day has shaken up the draft as several teams have turned their focus to working him out and possibly making him their first-round selection. Where he lands will likely be one of the top stories from Round 1 on April 26.
