CM Punk Beats Chris Jericho and What It Means for the WWE

David LevinApr 1, 2012

Hopefully, it means more of this rivalry.

If you watched the dynamics of the match, it had a real "chain" wrestling flair to it that you do not see today. It had its moments where the new "style" of CM Punk took over, but chain wrestling, submission holds and all-out counter moves ruled the match.

In my opinion, maybe the best match of the night.

But this match means more than just a title retention for the "Best in the World" and a loss for a part-time wrestler trying to find his "mojo" again. Both of these men gave everything in this match, and while I personally was not sure if it would live up to the hype, it certainly did, and then some.

Take away the outside angles, and this is a great "wrestling" feud, like Steamboat/Savage and Steamboat Flair or even Ricky Morton/Ric Flair.

It has that kind of vibe that is now rare in this business because quick matches and wins are all that seem important.

What this also means to the WWE, is that other talents can be re-entered to the mix as possible title contenders. Alberto Del Rio when he returns to action, or maybe Dolph Ziggler, and then there is The Miz. Does Cody Rhodes come to Raw, or does he stay on SmackDown and chase Sheamus?

All are worthy contenders.

But the interesting angle that can be resurfaced may be the best of all: Daniel Bryan.

After the smoke clears and he is done blaming AJ for losing the title (she loves him, remember) he can focus on his old "friend."

The two make magic in the ring, and their matches never end with a win, or "clean" win at that. There is always something or someone in the way. Does this become a big project for the creative teams to come up with a rivalry that can have legs like Randy Orton/Christian or a CM Punk/John Cena-type event?

Does the future of the company right now have something to do with two of the best performers in the business, who have a history of making great matches outside the confines of the WWE? It is very plausible. Will creative jump on this? Maybe.

But for now, let's hope the momentum of the match we just saw carries over so we can see more of them. Punk and Jericho continuing this rivalry is not a bad thing, but it is not the only thing that needs to happen for the future.
