WWE WrestleMania 28: Have They Dropped the Ball with Team Johnny vs. Team Teddy?

At WrestleMania 28, Santino Marella, Booker T, Zack Ryder, Kofi Kingston, R-Truth and the Great Khali will represent Smackdown GM Teddy Long as they compete against Team Johnny's David Otunga, The Miz, Drew McIntyre, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler and Mark Henry.

The winning team's GM will gain control of both Raw and Smackdown.

This match has been built as a fairly lighthearted contest. I'm sure the WrestleMania video package will be loaded with clips of Laurinaitis imitating Long's dance moves. As WrestleMania approached, the WWE focused less on the importance of having control over both brands.

I'm sure the 12-man tag team match will be an entertaining bout and it's certainly a great way to get all of those guys on the WrestleMania card. However, the lack of a compelling story behind the match is what, in my opinion, hurts it most.

In that regard, I think the WWE really dropped the ball by not seriously building the stipulation of the match. I understand that there is an audience for less serious matches like this, but I think that a little focus on, say, Laurinaitis' texting conspiracy would have done wonders.

Let's look at a possible scenario. Before the full rosters for each team were revealed, they could have shown Laurinaitis texting someone. Later on in the show, Mark Henry could have destroyed a random member of Team Teddy and then been revealed as a member of Team Johnny.

Like I said, it is fitting for this match to be more lighthearted. I'm optimistic that it will be an entertaining match. The build towards the match would have been more intriguing had they put a more serious effort towards it.

Has the WWE completely dropped the ball on the build for this match? No, not necessarily. Obviously, they could have done much better with it. I guess we'll have to wait until Sunday to see how the match unfolds with the hype it received.
