WrestleMania 28: Crowd Will Dictate If The Rock vs. John Cena Is Instant Classic

Adam WellsJun 7, 2018

The Rock and John Cena have all the pressure in the world to deliver in the main event of WrestleMania 28, but there is one big factor that will ultimately help decide if this match lives up to the hype.

That is, crowd reaction.

So much has been made about what the WWE is trying to do with crowd reaction, specifically for Cena, at this WrestleMania.

Everyone knows that Vince McMahon freaks out when he thinks that Cena is going to get booed, so the company tried to get the fans to give a split reaction at this show.

Sadly, all that effort will be for naught. There is no way that the partisan Miami crowd will turn on their hometown hero when he wrestles in his first singles match in nine years.

And that is actually a good thing.

If the crowd is split 50-50, it would actually detract from the match. No one would know who to root for, and a lot of the big spots would end up falling flat. It has happened in the past, not necessarily with equal reactions, but when the heat for the match was gone for one reason or another.

By having an incredibly pro-Rock crowd, they are going to be involved in every second of the match.

Rock will get cheered wildly after every move he does, even if it's just an armdrag. Meanwhile, Cena will get booed more than ever before—well, maybe as much as he was at Money in the Bank last year—and the fans will let him know how much they hate him.

By keeping the people in the match, regardless of whether they are cheering or booing, Rock vs. Cena will feel like the "Once in a Lifetime" spectacle that the WWE has billed this as being.

Even if Rock and Cena don't have the greatest technical battle in WrestleMania history, the crowd can help carry it to the rarified air of main event WWE matches. Their reaction will determine how much this match is remembered.
