Todd McShay 2012 NFL Mock Draft: Breaking Down ESPN Guru's Latest Mock

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

ESPN NFL Draft guru Todd McShay released the latest version of his mock draft on Wednesday, which can be seen here, and while much of it was pretty standard, there were some surprises as well.

McShay has never been afraid to voice his own personal opinions, and while it's nice to have a different take, some of his picks look downright foolish.

Sure, the majority of McShay's picks seem logical, but he gets himself into trouble when he tries to go too far off the board.

There is no question that some NFL teams are bound to make some mind-boggling decisions on draft day, but there are quite a few of McShay's picks that are incredibly unlikely to come to fruition.

Here is a breakdown of some of McShay's more head-scratching decisions.

Dolphins Take Ryan Tannehill at No. 8

There is no question that the Miami Dolphins could use a franchise quarterback after whiffing on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn this offseason, but to suggest that they will reach further than Stretch Armstrong to select Texas A&M signal caller Ryan Tannehill at No. 8 is laughable.

The Dolphins currently have Matt Moore and David Garrard at quarterback, and while neither may be a long-term option, both are good enough to hold down the fort for now.

Even if Miami really likes Tannehill, it could easily trade down 10 or more spots, acquire some more much-needed picks and still get their man in Tannehill.

I understand some quarterbacks have gone surprisingly high in recent years, including Jake Locker and Christian Ponder last season, but that doesn't mean that it will happen again.

With Quinton Coples and Michael Floyd still on the board in McShay's scenario, it would be stupid for the Dolphins to pass on them both and take Tannehill so early.

Cowboys Take Fletcher Cox at No. 14

After a few consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs and extreme disappointment, the Dallas Cowboys need to make a big impact with their first-round selection.

The defense was certainly a major issue last season, but Mississippi State defensive lineman Fletcher Cox isn't going to solve any problems.

Firstly, Cox is more of a late first-round or early second-round prospect, so taking him at No. 14 would be beyond terrible.

Secondly, while his versatility is nice, I hate the notion of taking three to four defensive ends so early since it's tough for them to make a tangible impact.

Dallas could use some help along the defensive line, but that can be addressed later in the draft. The Cowboys' biggest need is in the secondary as they were routinely burned by opposing passing attacks last year.

Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick is still on the board here, and while he has had some off-the-field issues, that doesn't usually stop Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

Even Stanford guard David DeCastro would be a far better selection for Dallas' rebuilt offensive line.

49ers Take Stephen Hill at No. 30

Earth to Todd McShay. Earth to Todd McShay.

The San Francisco 49ers signed Randy Moss and Mario Manningham this offseason and already have Michael Crabtree in the fold. I'm pretty sure they won't be selecting a wide receiver in the first round.

Perhaps Mr. McShay hibernated through the free agency period, but if that's the case then it's pretty tough to explain that tan he has. Either way, Hill is highly unlikely to be an option.

That isn't to say that Hill won't be a first rounder because I believe he has a great chance after his astounding NFL Combine performance.

He has a fantastic combination of size and speed and he wasn't able to show it off in Georgia Tech's option offense.

Somebody is going to roll the dice with him in the late first or early second, but it won't be the Niners.

San Fran doesn't have many—if any—holes to fill, but you can never have too many pass rushers, so USC's Nick Perry would make more sense.
