CM Punk vs. Chris Jericho: WWE Needs Championship Match to Be a Classic

Adam WellsMar 28, 2012

WrestleMania has been built around three matches, with the WWE championship match between CM Punk and Chris Jericho being at the bottom of that list. However, there is a golden opportunity to make the title feel relevant again, and the two stars fighting for it can bring that prestige back.

The WWE likes to play hot potato with all of its championships, which makes it hard to really be invested in the title or what it means. It doesn't help that there are so many belts that you can't keep track of who holds what.

Since the number of titles isn't going to change soon, making the top prize feel like it means everything has to be the top priority for WWE coming out of WrestleMania.

Punk has talked of bringing honor back to the title, making it feel like it is something special when he carries it on his shoulder. The fact that he has held the belt for five months is also a positive. Before, there were times when it would change hands on a month-to-month basis.

With this feud between Punk and Jericho trying to settle the age-old debate about who is the best in the world, what better stars could WWE have wrestling for the championship?

But it is not enough just to settle who is the best in the world and figure out who the champion is. Punk and Jericho have to put on a performance that makes them worthy of being called the best in the world and WWE champion.

That is a lot of pressure to put on anyone's shoulders. It is basically like they are saying that they have to have the best match ever to settle this, or else it doesn't matter who wins or loses.

To a certain extent that is true. No one is expecting Punk and Jericho to have the best wrestling match in the history of the sport, but they can have the best one of the night—as long as they are given the time to tell the story and understand that chemistry is just as important as selling moves.

If they put on the kind of match that everyone knows they are capable of, it can do wonders for the championship. It can feel like it matters—back when guys like Steve Austin, Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Ric Flair Hulk Hogan, et al. were walking around proclaiming they were the best when they had it.
